ya know, I'm thinking maybe I'll revert to a wooden cap rather than fiddle with soldering..
Do makers do anything other than hemp to keep it tight?
Are epoxies or other glues used?

I honestly don;t know, and would have to ask the prior owner if he has a clue.
I can tell you though, that the makers stamp is pretty well worn away, so that itself
might give us a clue that it's been around..
