Odd .. a poem.

Odd. I just went in search of Stick. He had been recluse in his cabana for years. I had forgotten of him But something made me go look. I looked into the cabana - empty to the straw. Had I failed to make his outlook pleasant? Had I denied him his stickish delights? Had I failed to take his rejection...

Re: CP: OZ Whistles January 2017

Isn't Acetal fun? The material comes off the lathe tool in one long continuous thin ribbon. Fun indeed! And that continuous ribbon has to be guided off or it becomes a fluffy whirling blob which interferes with the cut. Finishing differs a little, and it does not like getting hot. Files are not ver...

CP: OZ Whistles January 2017

Greetings all! A new year, a new time, and some new directions for everyone - including Oz Whistles: Firstly, I will be making more of the "Visor" model for standard offering from my website. The Visor is almost exactly the same design as the Vambrace, but is made using acetal resin (Delri...

Re: Our instruments are endangered !!

I'll just observe that the fine tonewoods we use in making whistles were harvested years ago. Otherwise we should not be using them. Collections of properly seasoned tonewoods are dwindling and will soon become either prohibitively expensive or simply gone. The import restrictions of endangered wood...

Hi Brigitte,

Hope all improves on both the health and website/email fronts.
I know a lot of time and effort goes into these things.

All the best to you and Colin for Christmas and the New year!

Re: Some good music from a good friend - hope you enjoy!

Thanks for sharing this Mitch. I've only just now got round to watching/listening. It's beautiful. Gorgeous music, and the one Cian is getting is so warm ... kind of plummy. It's lovely stuff altogether. Very thoughtfully put together by the band, too. Yep. The whole thing is delightfully crafted i...

Re: Wanted Set of Whistles

Hi brassnebony,

I have a high D/C set available now in blackwood/silver.
I also have a B-natural nearing completion (also in blackwood/silver - assuming you are talking B-nat, not Bb?)
Unfortunately, I don't do A at the moment.

If you are interested, please PM or contact me via my website.

Re: Some good music from a good friend - hope you enjoy!

... Looks like the whistle could use a new bottom ring though. After having a closer look, I think that's an optical illusion - perhaps it just needs a polish? One thing I did notice was that the whistle was well warmed-up for the performance - you can see a twinkle of moisture draining from the bo...

A note of ultimate happiness

Darwin was a grumpy old man. He wrote the origin of the species while seasick and feeling sorry for himself and wishing he was "fit". which he was not. So he said: "the survival of the fittest". Being fit enough is enough - so he was saying things with great forbearance and great...

Re: Newbie question: Timing of breaths?

All above is brilliant advice! I'd only add that diaphragm breathing is essential. If you do not use deep-diaphragm to fill your air-column, you will be looking for 2 or more breathing-points in each 8-bar part. You will find yourself taking breath at the beginning of each part which will deaden the...

Re: Some good music from a good friend - hope you enjoy!

Lovely clip. Not usually a huge fan of the sound of fancy wooden whistles but that had a nice feel to it. Yeah - I agree so much. My kit has feadogs and gens and clarkes as well as SYNs, Busmans and Abells, and an example of many of the makers on this board - so many great makers! Players (me inclu...

Some good music from a good friend - hope you enjoy!

Here's a clip from a whistle I made a few years ago being played by a player I respect: https://www.facebook.com/AizleMusic/videos/1684313971886442/ It's an example of what I call "closed-slide" technique. I make the things to be played "in-tune" with about 3mm slide-open. But th...

CP: OZ Whistles November 2016

The year has been slow and fast - and here we are! Nearly 2017 already? I've been working as hard as I have ever done and gotten ahead of the curve (so to speak). This results in me having a surplus for the first time in 8 years. SO I can offer C&Fers some goodies in time for CHristmas! I have 3...
