Re: ideas for self-percussion with whistle?
Especially during the recent All Ireland Fleadh the hoofers and brushdancers were fecking everywhere. Too much. In Eastern Canada every young fiddle player now seems to be expected to be able to hoof while playing. It was a bit of a novelty when Natalie McMaster and Ashley McThingy were doing...

Re: ideas for self-percussion with whistle?
You'll probably want to look into podorythmie. (Chiming in late as usual) I have lived in Québec for 30 years and have many friends in the trad-music community and I have to tell you I have grown to loathe this practice, or rather its ubiquitousness and lack of subtlety. I can still just about deal...

Nice. No doubt you also know the air from Jackie Daly's playing - named after another song (A Ógánaigh An Chúil Chraobhaigh).Mr.Gumby wrote:Táim Sínte Ar Do Thuama - I don't know the name of the air, buit that's the song it's used here for.

Re: B roll problems
It has something to do with the upper octave >fingers up for c# > fingers down for B > initial cut on B for the start of the roll. This combination is especially tricky for me. The initial cut sounds just too long and awkward, and is, of course, throwing off the rest of the roll. If the transition ...

A little more inclusive but almost as simple: "anything with one or two sharps in the key signature".benhall.1 wrote:I'm with colomon - D and G will do for me.

I am sorry to hear this. Like Susan, I remember Moonlight and the rest of the gang from those lively sessions in the chat room. Peace be with her, and with you, Alan.

The Caucus at Secaucus
Leafing through a tunebook yesterday I saw the date on this great flute tune and realized that exactly a quarter of a century ago today (almost to the minute), I was lying in a New Jersey hotel bedroom (barely conscious, after some mighty sessions the night before) listening to my friend and musical...

Re: How does a beginner know when to perform rolls
It is pretty common to shift the emphasis in a tune by moving a 'normal' (short) roll and I am not sure the effect is the same as what Steve calls 'off beat rolls' eg: B2 ~B2 BGEF|GABd efg Well it's certainly a roll on an off-beat, but it's not really the same thing. You are showing up the shortcom...

Re: How does a beginner know when to perform rolls
I do think I need to make clear here that in my thinking about a roll I would follow Breathnach's description of the rhythm of a free hopping ball . I suspect this is another(?) juncture where thinking about this (ornamentation vs articulation) diverges. If you look at, for example, the jig Coppers...

Re: How does a beginner know when to perform rolls
Chiming in late as usual, I would answer the OP's sister by saying, "don't put them in until you know where to put them in." This sounds similar to Richard's "cheeky" statement, and similarly might either come across as unhelpful and dismissive... But I think there is a subtle di...
