Re: Some Further Learner Observations

I assume what’s happened over the years is that players at Sessions have livened up what would become repetitive playing of similar songs over time by playing faster and faster and throwing in as many ormanents as they can so that to the beginner and learner like me the melody and even the rhythm o...

Re: Help with Cuts on a Killarney

I know I just made up that phrase, but I'm trying to refer to the rhythmic tonguing techniques described by Brother Steve as 'slur-tongue-tongue' for jig rhythms, which (in my limited understanding) could be incorporated in most tunes to some effect... For example, when playing 'edd gdd' like in th...

Re: Not wrong, just different

Just curious (like a new born baby) what constitutes a gimmicky tune? I would say this one is gimmicky because the first part is less of a melody than it is riffing on on a chord progression, which is not how traditional tunes are constructed, for one thing, and for another, the sequence of chords ...

Re: Not wrong, just different

BTW, as to it being "terribly difficult" on the whistle in Am, the only real difficulty goes away if you try this trick. In the second bar, once you have established your F-natural on the long first note by half holing, thus (v indicating the half-covered hole): [| xxx xvo] then leave the ...

Re: Not wrong, just different

I'm surprised to see that the tablature has a little down arrow to indicate the first octave. I would have expected an up arrow for the second, but there you go. Pat, the tune is easier in Em (as per the tablature on your photo) because you don't have to deal with half-holing the F naturals. But the...

That's a very good description of the one I had. Bit pointless really. I wouldn't recommend buying one unless you are (much) more concerned with materials and aesthetics than with sound.

Re: Do you miss the old days

C&F has been very important to me over the years. I have watched it change, as animate entities always do. I do miss the old days, in many ways. [...] Cheers. And cheers to you Byll, and thank you for taking the time to write your response. As you say, things change: communities get larger and ...

Re: Castagnari or Saltarelle?

Ciao Luigi.

I think a better place to ask this question would be on the melodeon.net forum. There are people interested in 18-bass accordions there. http://forum.melodeon.net/

Re: Ornamentation

In short, please share any and all info and tips on becoming skilled at ornamentation. 1. Listen to good players, decide what ornamentation you like and don't like. 2. Find out what the ornaments in question are and how to do them. 3. Practise them - obsessively - until you can make them sound like...

Re: Newbie - 4 chords question

Hi there, For example, if a song was C G D E in the verse and you wanted to play more than the single notes, what approach would you take to 'fill' or 'walk' between notes in a new song? Do you literally play whatever is between the notes eg. GABC|DEF#G|ABCD|D__E (and so on for whatever the 4 chord...

Re: B Flat Recommendation

A really good Generation B-flat can't really be improved upon IMO. If you want something that has similar characteristics but will last your lifetime without cracking, melting or being destroyed by accident, get a Sindt. Very similar but the tone has just a little less character I would say. But tal...

Re: Roll on quarter notes?

Surely a typesetting mistake. If you provide ABC for the last few bars of the section concerned, or a scan of the page, we should be able to solve the mystery.
