Re: Blackwood flute bitter taste

If you love the flutes of that maker, maybe you can get a flute made of a different wood or material to see if it remedies the situation. You’re definitely not the only flute player who has experienced a Blackwood allergy. In fact, the maker of my flute is allergic to it, which is one of several rea...

Flute music recommendations

I’m currently home from work with a fever, for the second time recently. I have been using this as an opportunity to try to hunt down some good new music to listen to on YouTube. I was hoping you might be able to offer some suggestions for flute players to check out, so I can enjoy listening to some...

Re: Grunting

Glottal stops/tonguing are not grunting, and the practice of these techniques are not related to this problem in any way. Grunting happens to some players when they are beginners or have been without playing for much time. It simply disappears with practice, so dont worry, just play and have fun. I...

Re: Blackwood flute bitter taste

That’s very strange indeed. Maybe a Blackwood allergy? I would ask a doctor about that. Can you look inside the flute with a light and see if there’s any kind of mold or anything in there?

Almond oil does go rancid, by the way. Leave a jar open for a long time and then check it to see for yourself.

Re: Suggestions for a travel and practice whistle?

Of the three whistles named in the OP, I have two of them. I have a Dixon Trad and the Susato V series. Both are excellent. I bought the Trad when they were first offered by Dixon. It is every bit as “sweet” as the rumors would have us believe. Easy blower. Good intonation throughout. Tunable. And ...

Re: Busker or Loud whistle recommendations?

I consider Copeland and Burke to be good choices for a louder whistle than something like a Clarke/Generation/etc. Yes, Susato is louder than those still, but maybe a bit overkill. Also, you either love the tone or hate it, as they have their own sound. Something to keep in mind is that the sound of...

Re: Questions Regarding Foot Keys

First question- Does adding a low C and C# key affect the strength of the low D? I recall reading this somewhere online, but I have never been able to compare the same flute with a C foot and a keyless foot side-by-side. I realize this may vary from flute to flute, but I am just curious to hear wha...

Re: Questions Regarding Foot Keys

Third question- Can I vent the first hole and play a high C by holding down the foot keys and having all fingers down except L1? Almost. Specifically, on a typical 8-key (don't know about the Boehm-style foot), you vent L2 to provoke the harmonic of the low-C. Low C# is readily available from your ...

Re: Irish Flute Recommendation

Coincidentally, I just asked a question about foot keys and how they affect the low D, as well. What I can say in regards to your other questions, is that with flutes there is so much that comes down to the player. A fantastic flute for one person might not be the best option for another, even if th...

Questions Regarding Foot Keys

So, I’ve long had the intention of having new body segments made for my flute to add keywork to it. I had a 5-key flute briefly in the past, but sold it and have been playing keyless since 2016 or so. Until now, I have been finding ways to manage the sharps and flats with a combination of cross-fing...

Re: Recommended case

This hard case perfectly fits the bill for what I’m after, as I wanted something hard due to the fact that I am often carrying multiple things when I’m coming in and out. I would use the whistle compartments, as well. It would be perfect for my lunch-break music kit. Thanks very much! And thanks to...

The Baubet is mostly modeled on R&R flutes, and is more than three parts.

I would be willing to pay handsomely to anyone who has one to sell. These are my favourite D whistles, and I gave my extras away to people who liked them before realizing that they weren’t still readily available for purchase.

Re: Aging/darkening of Mopane, Boxwood, and other non-blackwoods?

My main flute is mopane, and was originally brown with almost a slight sort of reddish/purplish hue to it. The only difference now is that it’s got a tiny bit more dark brown notes to its colour. Just a small difference. At the end of the day, I don’t really care what happens to the colour of it. I’...
