found this list by Jens_Hoppe here on C&F at: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?p=43879#43879 One of the mailing lists - probably woodenflute but it could have been irtrad - had some discussion on the identity of the tunes. I sort-of noted peoples' conclusions down at the time and came up ...

Tension usually comes from playing too fa[s]t - which is another way of sayng that you're trying to do too much. Most intermediate players (you've been at it for three years, right?) can hear more than they can accomplish comfortably. If you always play within your comfort zone you will be relaxed ...

for home recording, some sort of sound aborbing barrier, or "gobo", makes a big difference. i use thick moving blankets draped over mic stands. put gobos behind the mic(s) so that they block direct reflections from as much of the room as possible. this reduces the volume of direct room ref...

intermediate player datapoint ahead: i have found learning on more than one flute beneficial. the ability to compare and contrast the little differences in technique between different flutes helps avoid quirks from adapting to a single flute's strong and weak points. habits formed from playing one f...

fwiw(aipnm)*: Skip's flutes seem to this intermediate player to be designed for his prefered technique, in which the embouchure hole is rotated away from the lips and kept uncovered as much as possible. see his website for a detailed description. by reports, this works well for "big air" p...

otoh, it's hard to overstate just how much *fun* it is to play the Ward Eb! (quoting myself. how cheesy! :o) i mentioned above that it was similar to the Ward Eb, and want to say Jon C's delrin rudall copy is also *loads* of fun to play. as a lower D flute, it has a bit fuller sound than the Ward E...

Just a question, though. If our Eb flutes were to have the D bodies retrofitted to them, as he advertises on his site, then would they sound altogether different, or still be razorlike in sound? I particularly love the emboucher on my Eb, this is a supremely playable flute. IMHO [...]M with the D &...

[...] it seems I would like the early versions by Paddy Ward. I really don't know if I would like one of his later designs, if they sound brighter, as I have read some descriptions of them here that say that. i've played one more recent vintage Ward D, and any tonal differences were not noticable i...

couple of quick bits that might be relevant: playing rolled in, or closer to the edge of the embouchure hole, means using less air in the blow. this requires more subtle control, so in my experience playing closer is harder initially. the pay off is more responsive and harder tone, but this takes ti...

alas, my Ward D continues in the "pry it from my cold, dead hands" category, so no luck here Corin. fwiw though, the Ward D seems like quite a different beast than the Ward Eb. the Eb is a *very* easy player, bright and nimble. the D is much more challenging to play and darker sounding. (i...

i have Tipple high A and Bb flutes. the differences are minimal, imho. i generally don't play above the 6th note on either of them (and that as quietly as possible), but they both have about the same level of (dis)comfort in that range. also in the high flute category, i have a bamboo G bansuri by J...

My reading of the Skip Healy passage is that he says you shouldn't cover any of the blow hole, whereas Nicholson is advising covering a half to a third. I don't quite get whats similar! Though I've no doubt that with practice players could achieve good tone either way. Rob i agree that Skip recomme...
