Re: the pi is a lie! bring on tau day!
My personal favorite is also the square root of 5 + 1 divided by 2 (originally called Tau but also Phi), but all life is defined by the fractal formulae of self-similar fractal mathemetics given to us by "Father" Benoit Mandelbrot of which Tau is only a part. Without his fractal formulae, ...

If you are looking for diversity in voicing design, you can't find a better site for diagrams than this... http://www.organstops.org/_apps/Illustrations.html Not all the voicing designs are "practical" for a Tinwhistle Maker", but parts are still worthy of study. It may seem strange t...

Re: Does anyone know of a good way to make a conical bore 15"
I make most of my conical bores using Metal Spinning lathe techniques over a wooden mandrel of the proper shape. Annealed Brass and Copper tubing can be spun down over a mandrel to a perfect conical shape in just a few minutes. Not everyone has a lathe to do this though. I doo my spinning on a small...

Here is a "safe" site to download a good whistle calculator program... http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Utilities/Tin-Whistle-Calculator.shtml I can vouch for this one (Phill van Leersum is a long time respected member of C&F) but there are several others out there to try as well (Google &...

Re: Whistle Mysteries Revealed!
The 45 degree chamfered lip edge is a good compromise for a rounded lip and easier to "scrape" with a sharp tool, but modern plasitc Recorders all have rounded lips (easy with injection molding). The difference in efficiency is minimal, but the round lips produce no turbulence. Here is an ...

I did not attack anyone and I said I didn't want to hurt anyones feelings...But how many people would post ITM,Tinwhistle chatter and Music culture at the NASA Hubble photo messageboard? It just didn't seem to fit the paradigm Of "Chiff and Fipple". I promise to put my tail between my legs...

Re: Whistle Mysteries Revealed!
Yes, the studies i showed do not have "Labium Ramps" and you are correct in that the vortex street is created as the airstream exits the windway "lips", but then the labium "splits" the vortex into upper and lower halves. The angle of the labium and leading edge of the ...

Re: Does anyone know of a good way to make a conical bore 15"
Conical bores eliminate the flatness in the second octave by shifting/compressing all the antinodes in the second octave closer to the voicing, this also increases acoustic backpressure. This is the reason Recorders are well in tune in the second octave. Cylindrical bores suffer from flatness becaus...

Re: Fast octave jumping!
Cover 1/3rd of the bore end hole with tape to improve backpressure. This will allow faster octave jumps. Also try the "O"ring tweak to create backpressure at the top of the labium ramp (Larger ring is better).

Re: Does anyone know of a good way to make a conical bore 15"
I'm a Journeyman Machinist with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have a few small Mills, but I make my own Reamers on a CNC Hobart milling machine. I suggest you head to your local High School Metal shop and see if you can con someone into making a couple reamers. You might also try a local Mac...

Re: Does anyone know of a good way to make a conical bore 15"
True, traditional Quenas are made to simulate a conical bore by making a reduced bore end hole in a natural bamboo "node", but a professional instrument would require a tapered bore for acoustic superiority. I suggest drilling a 1/2" bore first and then using a tapered "Reamer&qu...

Sorry, forgot about the "pink stuff". Krylon makes a whole line of paint colors, specifically designed for PVC and CPVC. They come in a rainbow of colors plus metalic and textured finishes. Acetone is still the best PVC/CPVC post-sanding polish IMO. The "Krylon Fusion" line is a ...

Re: PVC whistles HELP!!!!
The best way to clean PVC pipe to remove lettering, dirt etc. is a cotton cloth well soaked with Fingernail Polish Remover (Acetone). If you rub briskly with an Acetone soaked cloth, you can also smooth/polish rough sanded areas. Q-Tips work well for the tight spots. Don't let the cloth/q-tip get too...
