I tried that Mellow-D once, it was horrible & needed a huge amount of air, because of the much wider bore. I wouldn't recommend it, but in relation to tone, brass definitely has a much sweeter tone than nickel. What I would recommend though, is one of those Cillian O'Briain improved Feadógs, bei...

Happy Hallowe'en to all of you in the US! Here in Dublin we live in fear of Hallowe'en because of all the anti-social trouble it brings & bonfires going out of control, & accidents with fireworks, etc. Hope the festivities are more enjoyable in the US! By the way, did you know that the Irish...

Hi, I was also told in a shop in Dublin that the Oak whistles are going out of production - I presume you went to MacNeill's too? I was there a few weeks ago & they had some left still. You should snap a few up before they're all gone! I think they're being "replaced" by the Feadóg whi...

Hi thanks for all the info! I'm very disappointed that the Abell whistle hasn't got a great sound, I expected it to have a lovely clear sound, especially at that price! I really don't like a breathy sound at all, which is such a shame, as it takes away from the overall lovely appearance of the whist...

Seery Delrin Soprano D whistle, versus Abell Delrin

Hi,
I was wondering which is the better whistle - easier to play with better tone? People have told me that the Seery whistle is a copy of the Abell one. I'm interested in the Delrin models.
Thanks,

Overton Soprano D whistles - query

I'm considering buying an Overton D whistle & would appreciate some feedback from other members. Are they very hard to blow in the upper register? What is the sound like? Is there any difference between the whistles made by Bernard Overton & Colin Goldie, & which would you recommend? Is ...

You would need to put a lot of air into playing the high notes on a Shaw. I'm not mad about it. But a lovely whistle in C is the Generation C in brass - a lovely mellow tone & no squeaks. It's always been a favourite of mine - pity the tone is much worse in a D Generation.

I'd say the Water Weasel is the one to go for too. But if you're playing in a session, you'd want the one in Soprano D. A Susato whistle would probably be heard too. But an ordinary whistle's sound would be completely hidden in a big session.

wooden Sweetheart whistles - what do you think?

Hi all, many thanks for all the info. on the Burke versus Serpent whistles. Now I'm asking for more info. please! What do players think of the new professional model wooden Sweetheart whistles in D? Are they good for playing fast Irish tunes in a session? Do they require much air in the upper regist...

THANKS & question re. wooden whistles

Many thanks for your advice - it looks like the Burke will probably be the best one to suit me!

I'm also wondering if there are any wooden whistles which have a pure tone & require only a little air, especially in the upper register?

Thanks again,
