Hi Chuck. As has been pointed out this is a problem with Recorders as well as Whistles. I just checked on the net the specific heat capacity for woods is somewhere between 2 and 3 Kj/Kg*K, water is 4.2. I think African Blackwood is probably at the high end of this range, so warming it up with your b...

Have you tried making reeds from Phragmites australis?
It works really well and gets right down to the diameter needed for the high drone.

Hi Doug, nice article. PVC here in the UK seems to use different colour conventions the grey stuff is used for Drain pipes and waste-water pipes and white for drinking water, also conduite comes in black and white and is some other more crystaline polimer possibley ABS. ABS is also availible food in...

Hi Hans. That’s interesting, here in the UK the ABS I'm thinking of using is certified safe for use in the food industry, and it's the material that plastic recorders are made of. PVC has a low toxicity but may contain phthalate plasticizers. I think the toxicity problems are minimal with both these...

Hi MM Can I recommend a shareware prog called "Melody Assistant" http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/melody.htm The fee is only 15$ and it's a great little prog that will import, print and export almost every musical file format including ABC. I find it easy to use and the printing re...

Hi Mreek
If you want to eventualy play at sessions here's a few that most people know
The Blarny Pilgrim
The Kesh
Morrisons
The Pipe on the Hob
Tripping up the Stairs

These cover a lot of the range of tonalities and feel of the music.
Enjoy

Hi Sam, I find PVC a difficult material to work with, as it's a bugger to file. Can I suggest that you try the electrical conduit available in the UK at B&Q, that is much easier to work, I've made a low A and G Whistle using a Generation Bb head which fits nicely into one of the jointing pieces ...

Indian classical flute players use the “Pipers Grip” so I don't think speed should be a problem.
I play silver flute as well (mostly Blues, usually in E minor or G major) and the grip is very robust and stable, but I use PG on my simple flute.

2nd Octave Bb

I'm shore most of you will have bumped into xxoxxx for a second octave Bb on a D Whistle, but I could not find it in the fingering charts linked to this site.
I find it useful for bluesy type stuff in E minor or G major and makes an interesting trill using all the fingers of the lower hand.

Is the C nat on the Sindt sharp with oxxxox or is it the tone thats the problem?
If it's sharp tape a small amount of the lower edge of the C# hole to increase the effect of crossfingering.

High Ron.
I use an altered Generation head on a Polystyrene body that I made myself, and I'm very happy with the results.
I've managed to correct the intonation problems and I like the sound.
