To clarify the NSP tuning issues, the traditional key is somewhere around F# but there are sets in concert G and F. Unfortunately for sessions, G sets are relatively rare verses F and F#ish sets. I regularly play with a guy that has a G set (with a UP Bass Drone) and it's great to play NSP repertoir...

It's nice to see people making there own reeds from local materials. Elder is very common here in the UK and now is about the last opportunity you’ll get to harvest any; the buds are already swelling here in sunny Manchester. I've made some GHB reeds from Elder as well as instruments. I remove the b...

He makes really nice whistles in black wood as well or he did. I went down to his house with a friend who needed a new reed for his French style "Student Chanter" which your man knocked up from scratch in about 10 minutes. We stopped for a cup of tea and a chat and he was very friendly and...

Tunes common to all or most traditions

I had an idea before Christmas of getting together a collection of tunes in all the common dance forms that are shared by many traditions. The aim is to give beginners a basic musical handle on the style and range of the music from many (Irish, Scottish, English, Manx, Welsh, Breton, Spanish, French...

Hi Phil you might try the North West of England which is rich in sessions especially in Manchester and Sheffield and easy to get to from Ireland.
It also has wonderful scenery, historic sites and a good public transport system to get you about.

Yes Steve I dropped them in Kettle and the bindings of the Warnock reeds I used are fine though I might give them a coat of nail varnish to stabilise them. After I'd boiled them (just for as long as it took the Kettle to switch itself of) I adjusted them bye just immersing the blades in the hot wate...

I get my Pakistani reeds from FCN. http://www.fcnmusic.co.uk/branddetails.asp?section=1 I can't find the reeds on the site and I order through a music shop called Forsyth’s in Manchester. The company is notoriously badly organised and orders can take a while. The reeds are sold in packs of 12 and th...

Hi Mikko you might try experimenting by adjusting Pakistani GHB reeds which cost only £0.30 each here in the UK.

Hi Gabriel I've tried PMing you but it doesn't seem to work.

I'm interested.

Do they use half-closed fingering as in GHB and UP?

What would be the shipping costs to the UK?

All the best for the New Year

I made a Brass body for a generation head with this hole but it was muddy and quiet on low D, but don't let me put you off, you may have to make the D hole quite large to get a good sound and may be add yet another hole to so that the low C is not to loud.

Good luck

Not crazy at all Phoebe, the link above is basically what I do on a D Whistle for blues in E minor and you can use the same pentatonic scale for G major. The Bb Blues note can be slid up to from below or down to from above by half-holing and cross-fingering can be used. A nice Blues Bb in the second...

Hi Dave I have no software writing experience but I use Cubase on a regular basis and a reasonably well up on the electronics side of MIDI. The MIDI port is very similar top an RS232 port so there are lots of com's chips that you can use to send and receive midi messages. To send a small number of m...
