Hold the boat! If Christy Barry's #2 is the Butlers of Glen Avenue, then what's this?

Yes, I could do that, but I have to say, I haven't found the whistle yet where that third octave D (prominent in the tune) isn't a screecher.

Thanks for the replies so far. Out of curiosity, I tried it out on my D+ Silkstone and, lot and behold! It was much easier to play. Sadly, the tune is in A and my Overton A is not nearly as responsive.

Retitled Loftus Jones--descending run

I've been learning O'Carolan's Loftus Jones on an A whistle and am having difficulty with the fast descending run in the B part. It goes like this: d'dd'd c'dc'd|bdbd adad Anyone have any tips on how to get this to be quick but precise? Fingering's not a problem but rather how to control the sound o...

I have a Humphrey Stealth which I love. I tried a Journeyman A whistle and found it to have a much less rich and interesting sound. If Gary would make an A along the lines of the Stealth--brass and thin walls--I would buy it in a flash.

I used to own a Burke brass high D; it was a fine whistle but didn't have a lot of character. I love my Humphrey Stealth. To my ear, it has the quintessential tin whistle sound that you would hope to find in a Generation but won't unless you're very lucky.

Thanks very much for clarifying that. I've periodically encountered these M3U files and never could figure out what was going on.

Thanks, but every time I try to open it with Media Player, I get a message that a network error has occurred and no other application has worked so far either. Oh well. . .

I can't get those to download either--it's the .m3u format--It apparently has something to do with "listplay" but how that translates into a downloadable, playable file, I can't make out. I don't know what to make of it and neither, apparently, does my computer. If anyone can bring any lig...

Based on the samples at Sounddogs.com and looping them into five minutes tracks using Audacity, I've been able to put together a few mp3s that, combined with the slowdown/speedup functions of MediaPlayer, function very nicely as a metronome that is much more fun to play with than the usual click/cli...

I have far too much cash invested in the key of D to submit to this tamely. On the other hand, if we were to move to Bb and its relative keys, Generation Bb's being as good as they are, we could all save a lot of cash. Just use the old notation you're used to. Fingering's the same on a B whistle as...

As far as I can make out, there is no single answer to this question. If you look at one old thread on this board, a person who had taken a class with her said that Mary Bergin suggested tonguing the second (cut) note in a roll to give the roll more definition and punch. Grey Larsen has a fair amoun...

A Susato Mystery

A long time ago I got a Susato D/C set, one head, two barrels. As a C whistle, it plays beautifully and sounds great. I feel no need, or temptation even, to get another C whistle. But as a D whistle, it has a raspy sound that sucks. So the difference must be in the barrels, right? Any thoughts or ex...

I think it's useful, once you know a tune, to combine slow and fast practice, working to a speed that is outside your comfort zone. First of all, it pinpoints the problem spots are so you can work them out and, if you pay careful attention, it shows you specific movements that you need to work on; s...
