Re: Back pressure of the more expensive whistles

i would add that even among any brand of whistle there is variation in the amount of back pressure between individual whistles. I prefer to play Colin Goldie's whistles and the variation in tone, breath, back pressure, articulation, varies between each one. perhaps not to a very large degree, but to...

Re: Little Love for Piper's Grip?

While i personally don't use piper's grip on my low whistles, the hands-down most fantastic low whistle player i've ever heard, Tyler Duncan (formerly of the band Millish) uses piper's grip on both low whistle AND on his higher pitched whistles as well. I had the pleasure of playing with him several...

Re: Productive practice routine suggestions

I have been playing for quite some time and have considered taking on a few students lately but so far have not formally taught anyone. From what i can remember of my own learning process when i got started there are only a few things that really stand out as key components. some have been said alre...

Re: 100 things to do wrong starting the whistle.

I think this makes # 30?? something like that... Underestimating the impact of mindless drills on your technical skill. the only reason not to do so is laziness, and the results from disciplined, focused drilling in practice makes your practice time 500% more effective. cuts, rolls, tongues, breathi...

Re: Beginner question

I learnt to play lefty 14 years ago and i haven't run into any serious issues save two (which some might argue are enough) first: if you start looking for a flute with a few keys on, then you must have one with key positioned for lefty players. (there are flutes and players who play them that do thi...

Re: Mic for whistle?

i've always found the SM58 to work best for me on whistle. in the studio and playing live. The 58 has a wider sound cone( \ / ) which you can use for dynamics. I've always found the the 57s are very direct( l l ) in the sound they pick up. If you move a little to the side of the mic the sound drops ...

Re: not for the ITM police... ;-)

:tomato:

I'll admit that i didn't watch the whole thing...but really??

The "secret" to playing the whistle?? After playing it for how long exactly?

I'm of the opinion that the secret to the whistle(and ITM in general) is to never think that you've figured everything out

Re: My first session - a real humbling experiece

Congrats on your first session!! The greatest lesson I ever took (and still take) from sessions is what I can do well and what I do poorly. I'll never forget one session about 4 years ago (which means I'd been sessioning for...6 years?) it was the first time I had sessioned outside my own town. I we...

I'd have to say that McGoldrick's Morning Rory is my favorite all time for straight flute. His playing is completely imaculate. It's techniquely flawless and his music flows like a river. others would include Flook's Flatfish album and Brian Finnegan's solo album. i could listen to just those three ...

agreed. Winnie is an amazing fiddle player and one of the sweetest people you could ever meet, but there are better. I'm not sure if you could have got the blend that they had though. She and doyle and seamus and john williams had such an amazing dynamic. There's no telling how different their music...

ITM dream team?

This has to be a topic that has come up before but as I don't have the leisure to go through the entire history of this forum I hope no one minds me bringing it up again (if it has in fact ever come up). Okay, disclaimer over. I was wondering what you all think would be the best possible ITM band (m...
