Re: McCallums/Dunbars/MacLellan/Pettigrew

That can be a bit of a problem. Personally, I like Shawn Husk's reeds. Good, hard cane, and not as much fuss as I've had out of other cane reeds in the past.

Hey sjcavy, have you had the opportunity to try a cane bass in your Macs yet? You'll be surprised, I promise you!

Re: McCallums/Dunbars/MacLellan/Pettigrew

Interesting to note. Now what I'm curious about is the finer details of how Cushing pipes are made (properly seasoned wood? threaded mounts?)

By the way, I just had the opportunity to play a set of MacPhersons. Great sounding pipes!

Re: McCallums/Dunbars/MacLellan/Pettigrew

Here is a quote from an email Roddy sent me when I asked about his bores: "My drones were originally based off of my grandfather's 1880-ish Hendersons. I changed up the tenors awhile back as I felt there was no use in keeping the same sound, and as far as I know my specs are my own." So hi...

Re: McCallums/Dunbars/MacLellan/Pettigrew

As far as MacLellans, here's the best way I know of to describe the tone of mine (reeded with glass Rocket tenors and a cane bass, as this is my preferred setup). I describe them as a Henderson bass with a MacDougall tenor. Not as much in the high harmonics as a Henderson, but definitely has the low...

Re: Is there really a tonal difference with hide bags?

I've noticed normally that the claim is made with sheepskin. However, where I live (west Texas, a hot, dry area) sheepskin really wouldn't be a practical choice.

Re: Is there really a tonal difference with hide bags?

Hmmm, that's interesting. I currently play a Bannatyne hybrid bag. I started off with a hide bag (my first set of pipes, already tied in) but got tired of seasoning it, thus moved to a synthetic. I, like you, didn't like the synthetic feel under my arm, thus I settled in to the hybrid and that's wha...

Is there really a tonal difference with hide bags?

I've heard this claim made that hide bags produce better overall tone in the instrument when compared with synthetic bags (much the same way with drone reeds). For those that have played both, is this claim true or just a myth?

By the way, I'm talking about the GHB.

Re: Adding Silver to Highland Pipes--Need Advice

I wouldn't recommend a DIY for retro-fitting because you have to have mounts designed specifically for your bagpipe. I don't know of anyone who specializes in it, but my suggestion would be to contact Ringo Bowen through his website (http://www.thebagpipeplace.com) and he should be able to direct yo...

Re: Atherton MacDougall Reproduction

Reeding has a lot to do with it. I've played with some Wygents and Ezees before and noted the volume was significantly less than it is with my glass Rockets. I'd describe my pipes as similar to Henderson, however not as much in the higher harmonics as the typical Henderson. Also it might have had to...

Re: Atherton MacDougall Reproduction

The Atherton MacDougall is definitely an instrument to be reckoned with. I was very pleased with my bandmate's set.

Also interesting you said a guy had a set of "quiet" MacLellans. Mine are quite loud and robust.

I didn't notice any threads in her pipes, but if you speak with him I'm sure he'd be happy to work with you.

Re: Atherton MacDougall Reproduction

They do have the Rockets. I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't get a set of Rockets with these. Obviously they're made for each other! Also, surprised to hear the MacLellans didn't stand up to the others. Don't get me wrong, the MacLellan sound is definitely different, but I'm surprised it w...

Atherton MacDougall Reproduction

Wondering what everyone who's played one thought. A lady in the band recently got one (she managed to keep the order secret from the time she placed it to its arrival). I grabbed it for a blow. Nice pipes. Here's the full write-up I did: http://thediaryofapiper.blogspot.com/2009/02/atherton-macdouga...

Re: So I Finally got them, and I promised TexasPiper

OK...so I hate to revive this died out thread, but I'm curious. Have your MacLellans cracked all to pieces? I just ask because yours were made at relatively the same time as mine were and was wondering if it had something to do with the stock of wood that our pipes came out of. Four out of the five ...
