Re: My first month on the pipes
What is the problem with your A, that you have to lift 3 fingers? The A with only one finger lifted is unstable. If I'm slightly below normal playing pressure it goes flat fairly easily. The 3-fingers-off A is what my pipemaker suggested, actually. Maybe this behavior is normal though and the answe...

Re: My first month on the pipes
Thanks so much for the encouragement and peace of mind! I have yet more questions now! The first one has to do with back D. I have no idea what to do with this note. I know it's just about the most ornery note on the whole instrument, and mine is pretty well-behaved, minus being a bit sharp. It's go...

My first month on the pipes
So about a month ago I received my Hubbert D half set. It's a stellar piece of work, both visually and aurally. Mr. Hubbert is quite nice too, and an excellent player. I've been practicing for about the same amount of time as I've had them (minus some for school and other things) and I'm finding out...

Re: Beautiful old recording
Never heard such reich reg playing! I don't associate older players with anything near this style---usually in these recordings you get a little one-two action...almost stride piano-y. Love it.

A Big Thanks
Hey all, I just wanted to say how appreciative I am of all the stuff you post here. As a barely week-old owner of a brand new Hubbert D half set, I think I would be a heck of a lot more lost had it not been for all the helpful stuff you all post on here. As I continue to form my fledgeling bag/bello...

How about Crowley (Crowley-style) pipes---I don't often hear much about those.

Re: What to do while waiting?
I'm waiting for a set of pipes, and I'm anxious to start on them, or at least find a way to get a head start. In the absence of a practice set, is there anything that I could do to help me get kind of a running start on the pipes? I've been listening to a ton of piping, but "more listening&quo...

Re: What to do while waiting?
I guess the whistle wins! I play a bit, but I guess it's time to get a bit more solid with my ornaments and such. With the piping fingerings too! Brilliant idea. I don't have a Bb or an A, but I guess my c would be my best bet. Thanks, al!

Re: Airs, Reels, and Other Questions for a New Piper
Hi "RR75" (?): *insert smart words* Bill Well said. Good advice for a person like me who is awaiting a set of pipes. Solid advice on the advice about Irish language and the airs, as well. This is why I hope to be in a Modern Irish course once i get to college...gets me working on knowing ...

Re: Seamus Ennis singing video
This is true. But really, I'd much rather the kids learn Béan Phaidín over the stuff they listen to on the radio...Patrick D'Arcy wrote:You obviously didn't go to school in Ireland!samiam590 wrote:but isn't it a bit...violent for school?
Pat.
Connacht Irish, huh? Good to know.

Re: Seamus Ennis singing video
Both links are great! i love An Poc Ar Buile...I also have a video of Liam Devally singing it. What a robust tune...but i particularly love the way Ennis sings it. anybody know which dialect of irish he spoke? And also, I am a bit surprised to see Béan Phaidín on the songs we learned at school album...
