A good session whistler.... whistles to get the barmaid's attention and ..... buys pints for the other musicians and ... drips spit on the bodhran player and.... impresses all with uncanny ability to get a lot out of a simple little tube with holes and .... really can add an interesting dynamic to a...

Good suggestion. Good luck getting to play others pipes, though. Many of us rarely, if ever, let others play our own instruments. An inexperienced player, and sometimes experienced ones, can wreck a reed for a while before it recovers by overdriving it with pressure. I've seen chanters at tionols cr...

Good question! I think the secret is to play the reg notes on the upbeat when vamping and the usual accentuated downbeat when using the typical chord approaches to accent the music. Reportedly, the NPU video #3 talks about this very issue. I'm not yet coordinated enough to do the vamping downbeat st...

It is possible that the person making the sale doesn't really know the difference. I do not know how much, if at all, DMQ used generic, non-ebony, blackwood for the chanters. I personally find ebony more desirable. Ebony is said to be more resonant and blackwood more stable in different climates. So...

That indeed looks like a Quinn set (so, I don't think there has been false advertising). David once said that if he could have his first 100 chanters back that he'd burn them. Fact is, his first 100 are still probably better than most chanters one could get their hands on at the present time. I've h...

Hey BruceB. Take your own advice. No need for you to keep chiming in and drawing stuff out of the previous posts and experiences. If you want to see the thread die then stop posting. It just fans the flames. Do you have some sort of agenda here?

That's pretty impressive that DDaye would have 4 humidifiers going. Brian, sounds like you're making great progress. Try to play an f# grace note in front of the high octave g...just a wee little f# first, barely perceptible, as you are lifting the two fingers to play the g when going up from G or a...

I'll chime in here, too. I live in Nashville and know both Terry, the initiator of the post, and Jessie. Jessie is a fine person. Very gracious and unassuming....and very patient with others. She and her husband are definitely counted among my friends and, if you knew them, you'd welcome them into y...

I seriously doubt that Mr. Daye can do that. I do not think that he, living on an island surrounded by water, where it often mists, at nearly sea level, could even begin to drop the humidity low enough to match the indoor climate, with heat on, outside temp of 28 degrees, at 5000 ft. I'd bet the hum...

Hang in there. Don't yet admit defeat. It takes months, if not years, of playing to build up the strength and coordination to play these things. A new reed will take about 20 hrs of playing to settle in. Especially in your climate, where the reed will collapse down some due to the dry air, you'll wa...

Yeah...good idea. Then, the postings can be made to debate the existence of God, insult one another, and facilitate other meaningful "personal" interactions that lead to disappointment. By all means, do not open the forum to someone who wants to "troll" (oops---can I say that)for...

Good question. Interestingly, no two reeds sound the same in any given chanter. What's more interesting is that, in chanters believed to be nearly practically identical, the same reed will sound very differently. I've hard it mentioned that it is 90% reed and 10% chanter but believe this formula omi...

I actually prefer the Armagh pipers club book and tape to any tutor other than the NPU videos. The best way to learn is, however, to take the time to go to tionols and meet live pipers and instructors. With regards to H. Clarke, its not the chanter that grates me, its the piping style that I do not ...

Pan Canady's post is excellent. Reminds me of a quote I sqw recently that applies to learning an instrument. It goes something like ..."those who get ahead do so by applying themselves while others are wasting time." Glandman
