Yes indeed including Henry Hill when he made my flute in 1832. Then again maybe he wasn't considering ITM players?

Re: Tips for curing a flat low D ?

If you want to physically alter the flute my vote for the best option to try is enlarging the bore of the foot a bit. This will raise the low D about twice as much as the 2nd D, doesn't alter the outside appearance of the flute, and can be done with a bit of sandpaper and an electric drill, or even ...

Re: Getting the hard, dark, tone

Hi Hans You are right in that the harmonics will all be in tune with each other when playing a particular note. But what happens if the overblown note and the fundamental notes aren't in tune. eg For low D pure fundamental at is at 284Hz (10Hz flat of the 294Hz it should be at) but pure overblown at...

Re: Getting the hard, dark, tone

Terry I think you should mention somewhere that this style of blowing isn't only about getting the hard/dark tone, but also about getting older type flutes to play in tune.

Re: Ways to play in tune - that old R&R chestnut

Mark
If you push in the tuning slide a few mm, and pull out the left hand section from the barrel by the same amount, does the tuning of B when you're playing it improve?

Re: Ways to play in tune - that old R&R chestnut

IMO RTTA/Flutini can be very useful for players learning to play in tune but not if used wrongly. And by wrongly I mean watching it while you play. I named it "Polygraph" for a reason: because it can print lots of graphs of what you did, and because the original "Polygraph" is th...

While I own a bunch of different flutes I only play one of them. Hill/Monzani 1832 8 key.

Re: Fault diagnostic - leakage or other explanation?

thanks, I understand just what you mean now (bit slow on the uptake there). As Jem says, finding a bore just the same could be a challenge but I can think of some fixes to try out the principle. Anything that might narrow the gap between flat G and sharp A (without hacking away at any tone holes) c...

Re: Fault diagnostic - leakage or other explanation?

As Jem said regarding the tuning slide. Extending the slide creates a bore expansion which affects the notes at 2x the distance of the expansion from the blow hole; usually this is G but varies from one flute to another. I'm curious about the flat G4 you're getting. This is the same thing I got on m...

Re: Fault diagnostic - leakage or other explanation?

Mark, you might like to experiment with inserting a bit of tuning slide to fill the 1cm gap, it could raise G4 (but it won't have a major effect and it might also not be G that's altered). My own Metzler has the same thing yours does with G4 a bit flat, and it's basically corrected with a bit of sli...

Re: Fault diagnostic - leakage or other explanation?

Hi Mark
Looking at your last tuning plot I'm a bit curious about a couple of things, especially when I think about my own Metzler flute. How far out did you have the tuning slide? I'm presuming your plots are at A=440Hz

Re: Key Stamps on antique English flutes - survey request

Hi Mark Yes all correct AFAIK. The makers mark is HH for Henry Hill, doesn't show up very well in the close up because it's side on (low C# key), but you can see it more clearly in the other photo on the low C key. The head is no clearer on my own Monzani/Hill flute that on those photos so I can't s...

Re: 8 key Cocuswood Wallis Flute

I think I can recall a Don Whillans rock climb once being assigned a grade of "Hard, Dark, Savage and Ugly". So along with the Hard D and Dark Tone, we now have Savage Tuning. Not sure about the Ugly yet but perhaps it's the result of the first 3 put together.

But it does have the maker's mark on top. In this case HH for Henry Hill, as well as the date stamp etc.

Re: Key Stamps on antique English flutes - survey request

Of course this business of stamping marks under the keys is all very well but Monzani and Hill did it properly - on top for all to see. I don't have a photo of my own Monzani/Hill to hand but here's a couple of photos from Rick Wilson's website: http://www.oldflutes.com/articles/monzim/hm0.jpg and c...
