Re: Welsh Tunes for St David's Day

I don't know the Welsh titles, but two tunes well known in the United States are The Ash Grove and All Through the Night. Another known by the New England contradance crowd is Sweet Jenny Jones. I've heard English words put to them, but I'd love to hear them in their original Welsh (perhaps with acc...

The Irish shop in Newport, RI

Ron, that Irish shop is where I bought my Walton's. Great little place, and every time I've been in there they have different stock of stuff. I once bought a book by Paddy Twomey (an autobiography with a ton of unusual tunes and songs in it); and last time I bought a pennywhistle book called The Pip...

Twisting its head off

thank you all, gentlemen. I should be OK.

Azw, the Tipple is a PVC flute. No fancy doodads, and the head slides into the body with a bit of twisting. Amazing sound.

Twisting its head off

I have a few bamboo flutes, and they are all one piece. I also have a Tipple, which is in two pieces. I notice that a number of flutes have cases that require that the flute be dismantled. Some folks suggest that the head be carried with one throughout the day in order to snatch minutes to work on e...

old time music on irish flute, is it done?

My band (shameless plug) does OT music from the 19th century and beyond, and we have always had a pennywhistler. Our "Campfire" CD (http://www.heritagestringband.com/music.htm) features pennywhistle on nearly every cut. The musically inclined of the period played whatever instruments they ...

I am a Tipple booster. Once you have gotten the fingering stretch under control--shouldn't take too long--and the embouchure is consistent, you will find it sounds great and plays likewise. Another important point: you can play it in any weather and it won't swell or crack.

Taity, here in the USA, a polecat is a skunk. Are you referring to that or to another type of fauna?

Enclose, first you MUST set goals. You might become a passable technician without goals, but never a musician. As far as a teacher is concerned, I began playing traditional music in the late '50s. I did not learn from a teacher because there were none where I live. I learned by listening to recordin...

On the subject of tweaking, I have noticed that every tweaked whistle I have has had the open space below the windway filled in. I filled in the space of a kind of rough-sounding Feadog with poster putty as an experiment, and the improvement was remarkable. So this causes me to wonder: if a filled-i...

My set of tweaked blue Generations arrived, I've given sthem a week's worth of use, and I love them. As you might expect, the Bb has a very different feel and air requirement than the high G, but use makes them all comfortable. So I can vouch for Jerry's work on Generations and the Sweetone D. I hav...
