Re: Hope for a cheap violin?

Thanks for the luthier advice. It would be handy if there were one close by and I could afford one right now. I will keep it in mind. Maybe I could get a book and tinker with the bridge myself. I know I can buy spare bridges cheaply so it may be fun to have a go........any tips here appreciated. I w...

Hope for a cheap violin?

I bought a cheap violin for myself back in October. Now I am at the point where I am making some decent sounds come out of it. I bought Dominant strings which helped the sound I think. But last night I played my friend's really nice fiddle (not sure of the make but it isn't Chinese like mine) and I ...

Interesting topic. Manly hands that have a few old scars, big knuckles, a couple of callouses and some fresh nicks. Those are my dh's hands and I love em. I can't stand wimpy man hands. Nothing lamer. He doesn't play any musical instruments I should add. He used to play rugby and was in an office fo...

10 days. I haven't used it all, though. The problem is that it is so small that it has now broken in half and is just going crumbly. I may be putting too much on, I really don't know. I usually swipe the bow shimmying up and down 2-3 times before I play and I play anywhere from 30 minutes to few hou...

That is wonderful! It is such a great feeling to know you are able to make music and make it sound good with others. As I am new to the strings forum, can you tell me how long you've been playing fiddle?

Rosin types

So I have burned through the tiny rosin that came with my el cheapo fiddle. I was looking to order some on ebay and was surprised at all the different types there are. Are some better than others with regard to better for the strings/bow or perhaps last longer? I see some create less dust which woul...

Just a thought, and one you may have thought of and dismissed already, but perhaps you could have one delivered to a nieghbor's home if you are friendly with them. Otherwise if you have family or friends nearby you could have it delivered to their home. What a lovely Christmas gift! :)

Funny how it changes. My first whistle was a Walton brass with green top. I played it for a year or so. Didn't know there were other whistles available until I found this forum, where, at the time more whistlers recommended sweetone than any other cheapie. I got a sweetone and learned that my Walton...

I was told the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that one has "strings" and the other has "strangs". This was from a lady in the deep south with that typical southern accent. That put it all into perspective for me an now I am happily learning the fiddle! :P

Thanks so much for the replies. Great links. I've checked the mirror and made some adjustments but I can't seem to hold the fiddle between my chin and shoulder w/out hands - I'm not sure if it is my positioning or the chinrest needing adjustment. I have discovered that if I stand I'm less tense and ...
