Re: How much wood have I used making flutes for 30 years?
I've decided to learn how to make shoes. I wonder how many cows I'm going to go through before I make a decent pair? How many flutes did it take before you made a really good one?

Re: Cup holders (random thought of the day)
I ride a Vespa. The fueling is under the seat. I can fill up from any side.
It is sad that cars will have multiple cup holders but my Vespa does not have even one. I can put a cup of coffee in the glove compartment and if I'm lucky, not too much of it will spill.

Re: A Supercell Thunderstorm Cloud Over Montana
Wow, so it is real then huh? The sky in Santa Barbara is soooo boring. Endless months of blue sky followed by endless months of fog. Whenever there are any clouds, people get out the camera and post pictures to the local community news web site. "Amazing cloud I saw!" And it's just an ordi...

That doesn't look real to me. It looks like it was created for a movie. Is it real?

Re: Whistle makes me nervous but I want to play more
A volume control? Like a knob? I'm waiting for the capo to come out. My flute is pretty quiet. It's a boxwood flute. It's extra quiet when it's cold. I don't play in public anywhere else unless it counts that I sometimes play my whistle on Sierra Club hikes. I'm going to try to force myself to play ...

Re: Whistle makes me nervous but I want to play more
Maybe it's not as loud as it seems to me? Is that what you are saying? That is good news.
I get so nervous I mess up easy tunes like Out on the Ocean.

Whistle makes me nervous but I want to play more
I've decided to work on having the courage to play my whistle more in the session. I feel afraid to play it in the session because I tend to get nervous and make a lot of mistakes, and it seems that the whistle is a very loud instrument. I usually play flute instead because it is quieter. I could us...

Re: Poll: How do you learn Irish traditional tunes?
I got started with notation. I was given a copy of the book of sheet music my session used to use back in the day when they used a book of sheet music. (It's a big long story, and they no longer use the sheet music.) I also learned a lot of tunes that they didn't play. Since they never played them, ...

Re: Making a walking stick flute
Rob harvests his own bamboo and whatever type he's growing has very long sections between the nodes. For example if your bamboo is 3/4" inside diameter then it will need to be over 21" between the nodes to have a sounding length that's long enough. I can tell you from experience :x that u...

Making a walking stick flute
10 years ago we bought some clumping timber bamboo. Just now my man cut off a nice walking staff for me. It's green and very heavy. It is thick with many sections. I want to make a walking stick flute from it. I figure this much is true: - Use that javascript flute hole calculator to position the ho...

Re: Opinion about wearing a skirt with swastikas on it
however I assure you that millions of women in India own extraordinarily beautiful saris. I've been to India. It is true. Anywhere I went, they had beautiful saris and salwar kamiz. I even had a chance to go to a store and buy something (a department store). I was overwhelmed by the choices. The wo...

Re: Cnat (for the D whistle as example) cross-fingering
On my flute 0X0XX0 or something like that sounds better. But I got so used to 0XX000 that I just can't do that. If I could go back to the beginning, I think I would force myself to use the other fingering just so it would be easier now on my flute, but hindsight and all that.
