Re: What should I do with an old sliver flute that doesn't play?
Thank you. I'll call around and see if I can find a school program or something. I took it out and maybe the tarnish isn't as bad as I remembered. It's really only the low C that doesn't work. I wish I could play it. I played flute in high school. Now I can't remember all the fingering. It would be ...

Re: Anyone tried a sweetheart 10-hole or keyed whistle?
I would think a recorder would be more churchy. I used to play recorder in a quartet in church when I was a kid. I played the tenor because I thought it was cool to play something so big. My dad put extensions on the keys so I could reach. I've brought my whistles to a yearly Christmas party and dur...

Re: What should I do with an old sliver flute that doesn't play?
The head is silver but the rest is nickle-plated or whatever that basic deal they do is. It's badly tarnished and the lower notes don't play. I think the little springs don't want to close all the way. Open finger holes. I would think it's pretty worthless but it feels wrong to dispose of it if mayb...

Re: The most repeated question on the Chiff and Fipple
I cast my vote for other, so here's my specification: I think this might work similar to how it works for those who would like to get a parrot. I suggest to people who want to get a parrot to save your money (and your life) and get a small, inexpensive, easy-to-care-for bird like a cockatiel or a bu...

What should I do with an old sliver flute that doesn't play?
I have a regular Gemeinhardt flute. It's tarnished pretty badly and the bottom two notes don't work. What would be the best thing to do with it? Would a school be able to fix it up? Seems a shame to throw it out. I suppose I could donate it to the thrift store, but I thought I'd ask here first.

Re: Wierd side-blown whistle
Definitely aluminum and brass. The thing you blow on doesn't come off. I didn't think it was any kind of rare item. I just had never seen anything like it before. It actually sounds kinda sweet.

Re: Whistles with 2+ octaves
Like others said, you have to play the notes up or down an octave when they don't "fit" in the range of your whistle. Alternatively you could maybe play notes in the same chord, like if we're just talking about pickup notes you could skip them or play different pickup notes.

Wierd side-blown whistle
Someone gave me this side-blown whistle. It's a vile thing. It tastes like chewing on aluminum foil and it's in the key of somewhere between B and C. It says Western Flute Company S.F. Cal near the top. Has anyone seen anything like this? http://i.imgur.com/nUdaGMhl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/43JzY7Ll.j...

Re: Good low D whistle for beginner?
Oh sorry for the confusion. The bendy notes: On my low whistle the notes seem to bend with air pressure changes, even slight ones. Plus it takes a lot more air than my flute. And then the holes are rather large for my fingers so if I don't close them perfectly, there is also a lot of unpleasant vari...

Re: Looking to start playing with others
If you go to your local session, bring a recording device. I have a Zoom recording device and find that it does well even under poor conditions. But you can use an iPhone, too. Record some of their tunes and then learn them by ear at home. This way you learn them the way that they are actually playe...

Re: Good low D whistle for beginner?
I've read the criticism/comparison of wanting to know what is a "good car", so I'll try to help you out in describing a bit what I am looking for: - easy to play - e.g. relatively easy fingering/not requiring major finger distortions - relatively low breath requirement, i.e. lower chance ...

Re: Carelessness with Whistles
I take my whistles backpacking. Somewhere there is an Eb whistle behind a rock in the Wind River range below Knapsack Col. It's yours if you can find it.
