Folks wondered why I got three different D whistles as my "first" whistle. But they all sound different, and which one is my current "favorite" varies by the time of day. For example, the Little Black Whistle was my favorite this morning. Its wheezy "brassy" sound fit t...

Thanks guys. You're right, these things are so cheap that just buying one would mean the postage is more than the whistle. I'll get a whole collection :P . Starting with Bb and C whistles since I already have D.

I am glad that I have only my cats. Though when I start practicing a musical instrument -- ANY musical instrument -- they flee to on top of the kitchen cabinets and start mewing piteously begging me to stop. But I am a mean daddy and continue playing whatever instrument I'm torturing at the time (wh...

What's the next key to get?

I have only had my D whistles for 2 days now, and am already looking for the next one :o . An Irish-Indian musician acquaintance recommends that I get a Bb because, says he, "it is wonderful when in desert canyons to echo it off the canyon walls playing an Irish tune." (Yes, he is of weird...

Now mind you, I'm not saying that Andrea's not faking it...she seems a little far from the microphone at some points, without the volume changing. It's called "compression", and it is standard for these kinds of live performance situations. From what I can tell of the sound, it appears to...

I don't have a whistle with a wooden fipple, but with harmonicas with a wooden comb, alcohol tends to dry out the wood and cause it to split over time. I'd rinse my mouth with some water and swallow or spit prior to playing. But that's me (shrug).

Followup on Little Black Whistle -- I gave it another chance. After the practice on the other whistles I had no problem getting any note I desired out of it. But it doesn't sound good. It really is too wheezy (is that the word?). It has been relegated to the bathroom for use while, err, doing my bus...

I think it's because the plastic ones are generally atrocities with bad tone, iffy tuning, and difficult voicing. A fine hand-turned wooden one of course is a classical Baroque woodwind, but due to the expense and level of care that a hand-built wooden whistle requires, most of us have never been ex...

Go over the hump into Panamint Valley and the sky is a bit darker, but you still have light pollution from Trona and Ridgecrest. But it's just a small smudge on the horizon. Not a *big* smudge on the horizon like 'Vegas.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Are you talking about that funny-shaped piece of plastic that sounds like, well, a funny-shaped piece of plastic? :P

Re: My whistles came!

Welcome to whistling! But ... skirl skirl skirl? Sounds more like a bagpipe chanter than a whistle. Never heard that GHB term applied to whistle before. I'm not sure what to call it, when you're flipping notes with your finger Irish-style rather than tonguing them. It sounds mighty much like what a...

Well, they average $7 apiece, so it was a case of "why not?" And as you can see, they each have their own different character, so it's not as if I bought three of the same instrument. They each have their own sound and character. Indeed, I'm probably going to buy a couple of other whistles...

My whistles came!

My first ones. I ordered them from House of Musical Traditions last Monday, the invoice says they were shipped last Tuesday. I've played the recorder before, and yes, the breath control practice with the recorder definitely carries over to the tin whistle. The fingering is different, of course. The ...

I currently have the PC-based USB recording setup with a Boehringer mixer and a 2-channel USB sound card . Compared to the old home recording standard (a Tascam 4-track), it produces a much better quality of sound, and editing and applying digital effects to the tracks produced are much easier with ...
