Re: Killarney High D Whistle

A few questions about the Killarney: How long have the brass bodied Killarneys been available? Is there a general consensus of the sound differences between the nickel and the brass (I know nickel is typically said to sound "brighter"). Also, is the brass-bodied model less slippery than th...

Re: Dixon comparisons

Have you looked into Clarke Megs or Sweetones? Yes, I purchased a Sweetone ~15 years ago - I think this may have been close to the time they were introduced, but I am not 100% sure about that. Anyhow, it was prior to the release of the Meg which I have not tried. I found the Sweetone easy to play, ...

Re: Dixon comparisons

...Or better yet... spend a little more (I think $82 shipped) and get a Killarney. I'm happy so far. Thanks for the suggestion. I am not familiar with Killarney whistles - I will have to research those. ...I haven't played the older style Dixon you mentioned and thus can't provide comparisons but I...

Dixon comparisons

After a long hiatus, I am hoping to get back into playing again. Like most everybody I own an assorted collection of cheaper whistles, and one of them is the Dixon (Key of D) one-piece (non-tunable) polymer. I see now that there are some very nice looking Dixon whistles with metal bodies and polymer...

Bb - Freeman tweeked and Hoover WhiteCap

Hello, Quite some time ago I purchased a Gen Bb. Long story short, it had some issues and after trying to tweak it...let's just say it has more issues now. I still really would like to have a Bb to noodle around with, and I am considering a Jerry Freeman Tweaked Gen Bb or a Hoover WhiteCap (to go on...

I realize that due to their design Clarke Original's inherently require more air, but I think it needs to be pointed out to those put off by the "high air requirerment" that it also depends on the player. One of my other hobbies is distance running, so I have never had a problem with the a...

I nominate Dale as Grand Poobah.

Good idea in theory, but not so good in practice. Personally I just look at someone's avatar and if I looks good I trust their judgement regarding whistles.

Kerry Posted: 27 Apr 2007 19:40 One other thing, if you haven't discovered Micho Russell yet, I would highly recommend his CD titled "Ireland's Whistling Ambassador." Micho is regarded as one the greats of all time, and he is also noted for using ornamentation sparingly. Every time I list...

I think you will be happy with your decision to go with the Och's book. As others have pointed out, it starts really basic and progress to more advanced topics. The thing to keep in mind is that no tutorial will be perfect, and certainly there will be songs you like and songs you don't. I purchased ...

I don't know if it is listed in the linked post, but high my list would be Paddy Moloney/Sean Potts - Tin Whistles. And although not a predominantely whistle CD, Cathal McConnell - Long Expectant Comes at Last. Many of the tracks feature Cathal on Flute (which is superb), but the tracks featuring hi...

I purchased my first whistle in the late '90s, so it sounds as if we both started around the same time. For me, this was the first instrument that I ever attempted to learn and play. I too have gone through many periods of improvement, only to find myself stuck at a plateau - so I feel your pain. Gi...

Whistlers who whistle?

I don't know if this has been covered before, but I was curious as to how many other tinwhistler players are compulsive whistlers (without a whistle). I often find myself whistling tunes - esecially in big stairwells or open hallways. Sometimes it is a tune I am working on (trad), but more often it ...
