Hi Jerry, Hmm.. perhaps the old ones with lots of partials was easier to tell ;) Anyway, try speeding these up as that seemed to help me distinguish between them. If you use winamp, then there's a brilliant utility plugin called 'Pacemaker' which allows you to change the speed, pitch and tempo at wi...

Glad to hear the samples were less grating! Hope it hasn't removed any of the tuning 'discernability' though. I might have to convert some of the others. However, since you did mention it, my mental ear is now hearing the same sequence of sounds a couple of octaves higher, sung by Alvin and the Chip...

Hi Jerry, Okay, I've reduced the number of harmonics down from 20 to 8. They sound more 'nasally', but less harsh. http://www.skytopia.com/project/scale/third/triad_sep-chordv_ET.mp3 http://www.skytopia.com/project/scale/third/triad_sep-chordv_JI.mp3 Here they are again at a lower pitch should you g...

Thanks so much for this response. First, your soundclips are about what I expected. The first one sounds pretty much right to my ear. The second one a little off, and the third one fairly chaotic. I'll presume here you mean for the dim 7ths. As for your thoughts on consonance/dissonance of pure int...

FWIW ... Unmistakeably, it's a just third. So I went to the piano to see what an equal tempered third sounds like. Even in sequence, not note against note, an equal tempered third sounds harshly out of tune to my ear. I'm certain that's not from listening to any particular tuning and having acclama...

It appears you like phase effects, which is a matter of taste. That's why accordions are available with differing amounts of "tremolo" for different sounds When I say phase-like effects, I only mean the type that normal instrumentalists and singers should be unable to avoid. We're talking...

Thanks for all for your replies! I would still be interested to hear from any JI die-hards if you prefer anything whatsoever about the ET versions. Try the ones on this page to make sure: http://www.skytopia.com/project/scale/third I actually heard equal temperament as hopelessly out of tune. It's b...

Just intonation intervals really sweeter than 12et?

Hi all, This is my first post to this forum. Although I don't play the whistle, I am curious about tuning and temperament, so would love to gain any insights into the topic, and you guys seem to know a lot from reading many of the threads. Most often I hear how equal temperament is a "compromis...
