Re: Keyless Grip Observances
I used to use non-pipers grip, and, it worked very well for me, but after several years and a bit of aging, I found myself getting numbness in my right hand after playing. Switching to pipers grip on the right hand cured the problem. I believe that this isn't uncommon and have seen others posting s...

Re: Keyless Grip Observances
I'd use a grip that can be used on both keyed and keyless so you don't stitch yourself up if you go on to a keyed flute. I vaguely remember a mate (a good player) who played pipers grip on his keyless flute had a few problems playing my keyed flute - he said that the keys and mounts were getting in...

Re: Flute Tuning problems
Hi Everyone, I have a Martin Doyle flute with a tuning slide and I have been playing for nearly ten years now. I have become reasonably accomplished. Playing in county and provincial competitions. I play in a band and I am constantly made to feel like I'm holding the band back because of my flutes ...

Re: Turlough O'Carolan on flute ;)
hi, does anyone know any recordings of flautists playing Turlough O'Carolan tunes? i've found two so far, and i'm really enjoying them: Fairy Queen -- Chris Norman's "Man with a Wooden Flute" Planxty Burke -- Clannad's "Clannad in Concert" (this is harp and flute) Anyway, if any...

Re: Rudall flutes & possible tuning issues, if any?
Truth is, many ITM flute players have a lousy ear for tuning, as noted by the number who play sharp in the second register and don't adjust to have a really good cross fingered cnat on keyless flutes, for example. So these players will often say a flute is in tune (when it isn't), but really can't ...

Re: Garry Somers flutes
"... the Somers aluminum (judging only from photos I've seen) are cylindrical bore flutes..." "... cylindrical (as opposed to tapered)..." "...I guess Irish music does need a tapered bore to acheive the best though..." Hope people won't mind me quoting them a bit out o...

Re: Garry Somers flutes
But a multi-thousand dollar investment is not necessary- delrin flutes by Copley, Forbes, Somers etc, are every bit as good as the more expensive wooden flutes. Agree that a multi-thousand dollar investment is not necessary. Disagree that delrin flutes by Copley, forbes, Somers, etc are every bit as...

Re: Garry Somers flutes
I'm new to the Irish flute as well and own a D bamboo flute made by Erik the flutemaker. It's a nice flute considering the price, he cares about quality and customer satisfaction but at the same time there's only so much you can do with a cylindrical (as opposed to tapered) piece of bamboo. I have ...

Re: NAF flute to match Irish flute
I do hope that, if anyone did make a side-blown NAF tuned flute, that they would embrace it's nature, and not, for example, use a narrow bore just to try and extend it's range much beyond the octave: I think that a wide bore would give a better low octave sound, and, IMO, a main characteristic of t...

Re: Trouble Deciding Which Instrument to Pick Up
I've just got a Native American Flute. Limited range, but, easy to play, and, IMO, of all the 'fipple flutes' (e.g. tin whistles, recorders etc) it's by far the nicest sounding in terms of easy-to-produce tone. If you're interested, check out this recent thread- http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/view...

Re: New Dixon tapered (conical) bore budget flutes
I demo'd the cheaper tapered bore on you mentioned in Hobgoblin (is there a store near you?). The store owner was fantastic and really friendly and very pleased just to hear us make a racket. It's not bad for the cost. I preferred the DX030 by far - particularly the tenor version. The DX030 is the ...

Re: NAF flute to match Irish flute
I got here too late. Oh well. The NAF was the first instrument I really fell in love with. You're right about it being easy to play, and it certainly does seem to have a spiritual side to it, even if you don't start there. Often I find myself feeling like the instrument is playing me rather than th...

Re: NAF flute to match Irish flute
One thing about the NAF- I was playing it this morning and I almost felt that I was cheating :) I've never known a wind instrument that sounds so nice for improvising, yet is so easy to play. The extra sound chamber gives a great tone just by blowing gently into it, and the scale makes it quite tric...

New Dixon tapered (conical) bore budget flutes
Wondered if anyone had tried the new Dixon tapered (conical) bore budget flutes out, and if anyone could offer some kind of mini-review/assessment of them? They're here- http://www.tonydixonmusic.co.uk/catalogue/dixonshop.html scroll down to TB021D (2 pc tunable £56) and TB014D (1 pc @ £32) My first...
