feel-good story of the week....

for those who haven't seen it, here's a link to a NY Times story and video about the students at an inner-city Bronx school taking up Irish step dancing:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/14/nyreg ... ted=1&_r=1

It brought a smile and a tear to this old cynic....

cheers,

In Mac Mail, you can bounce an email back making it seem like it's the wrong email address (you go into the menu bar to "message" and then select "bounce" from the pull down menu). I'm not sure if other clients do this or not, nor do I know if this is what you are looking for to...

audacity is great... i use it for editing and ripping youtube audios. i prefer the amazing slow downer for practicing music, though. it's the same difference, but a lot easier to use. it's worth the forty bucks, i think! Is it possible to use Audacity to get the audio from a youtube video, so I can...

Right clicking only lets you save the link to the file. I can't do anything with it after that. I want to be able to slow it down to listen more carefully. You have to first click the name of the tune; that gives you a page that says "listen to audio" (or something like that). If yo...

Asheville is a wonderful place to live, to dance and to play music. What it doesn't have is lots of paying jobs - but if you can overcome that drawback it's fabulous. I spend a few weeks to a month there every winter, calling dances and visiting friends, many of whom moved there from the frozen nort...

I, too, have been stuck on learning by ear, and I'd like to second the recommendation to get some kind of slowdown software. I've been using Audacity (too lazy to figure out how to put links in here - it's www.audacity.com - it's free) and have found it very helpful - you can slow down a whole tune,...

I'm in Peterborough - that's pretty central.....

I'll be at Blue Skies Folk Festival this summer, calling the square dances - that's pretty central, too.

Cheers

I've been on three (which should tell you how I liked them)- once off the coast of Maine and twice in the Caribbean. All these trips were many years ago, so I don't know if their culture has changed. All were very low-key and low in amenities (sort of like camping, but on the high seas) and very rel...

Re: Pastiche and Weltenschauung

thanks for the tips about converting vinyl to CD - yet one more reason for me to love Audacity. So far, I've used it to change the pitch on ecordings to one I can play on my whistle; to change the tempo and endless-loop sections of tunes I'm trying to learn; and to play along with distant friends by...

Re: Pastiche and Weltenschauung

Having recently worked out an easy way to record all my old vinyl and cassettes to CD, I've been working my way through my box of old tapes, rediscovering all kinds of old friends, sadly neglected ever since I got a car and stopped wearing my walkman everywhere I went. So what is the easy way you'v...

In our town (Peterborough Ontario) some of us fairly beginning players have started an informal "slow jam" that gets together every week or two - all are welcome, as long as they understand that our purpose is to have fun and learn tunes, and not to be virtuosos. We have, let's say, an ecl...

I've had metal rods in my back since I was 12. That's....well, that's a LOT of years, and they've never set off a metal detector. I suspect your body acts as an insulator, but I've never asked - decided to leave well enough alone.

cheers

I received my two whistles this weekend - the Hoover Narrow Bore brass and the O'Brien maple - thanks, Daniel and Judy!! Since all I've ever played is a Generation (I have one Freeman-tweaked, and one as nature made it), I'm looking forward to seeing how different it is to play these whistles - so f...

Since most of you have never heard of me, I just thought I'd let you know I've been a member of C&F for a while, mostly lurking but occasionallly posting - I tend to show up for a while, then disappear when real life starts taking up too much time.... but I did want to say thanks to Daniel and a...
