Nice shoes too... 8)
Indeed they are. I can never find nice loafers when I'm looking for them.

Oh my--I think I was looking at that flute on Ebay, or at least one much like it. All those extra lever keys remind me of a clarinet--which would, of course, have a bell on the end, but that may give you a clue about how you would finger it. It's lovely, and you're right about the wooden tone. I gue...

Re: Can you help me learn more about this flute?

...Now I'm working on making the adjustment from my old wooden Boehm flute... More than your new-to-you 6-key wood flute, that "old" wood Boehm flute got my attention. For instance, "old' wood flutes have not been made in the United States since about the year 1920, virtually all of ...

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback--I'll snap some pictures after the sun comes up and post them. Re cracks in the headjoint--I inherited a piccolo from a great uncle that cracked severely in the head joint. I traded a Boehm system piccolo to my flute fixer in exchange for the repair. The last time I tried to ...

Can you help me learn more about this flute?

I was in an area antique mall the other week and my companion pointed out a 6-key wooden flute sitting in a display case. I went to get someone to unlock the case and had a closer, skeptical look at it. It appears to me to be not old, of some sort of wood (not black)--I would have said "rosewoo...

Way cool to meet her. Not too sure about chucking food at other people, though. I love her Pern books. She and Rebecca McAvoy are my two favourite SF authors. djm Do you mean Roberta "Bertie" MacAvoy of Tea with the Black Dragon ? MacAvoy was one of the first authors I looked up, based on...

Got three cats at the moment. Two are downstairs and one is banished to the upstairs since she bloodied the ear of the smallest of the older littermates. Useless as mousers, though. Generally they just demoralize the mouse until it's huddled up under the toilet (neither bathroom having a mouse-sized...

Fun, Music, and Sad News

It's been a while since I've posted and I think I can sum up the reasons I'm back today with:

I had a great time at Folk College at Juniata (not Juanita) College in Pennsylvania

I've been pretty busy trying to build a freelance/consulting business (and that subject goes immediately ...

I just stumbled into this thread after a long absence from the board. I offer up my condolences and second all the good advice about living wills and health-care proxies (both of which I now have in place). There is a new book out that I'm interested in finding and reading: How Doctors Think , by Dr...

Chicago

I'll be in Chicago about three days in May (around the 18th--I'll have to check my calendar) for the Adobe InDesign thingie that's going on at the Holiday Inn (I think--Gawd help me navigate; I've never been to Chicago before). I won't curl up and die if I can't get to a session, but I thought as I'...

Re: I got my gold belt in karate today

*socks you all in the nose* Not sure why they call it a "gold" belt though, it just looks yellow to me. :-? **blocks and counters** Congrats! As it happens, I had my most recent test on Nov. 5. (Yes, I passed, thank goodness.) I've been doing Tae Kwon Do since 1990, and have end...

I discovered Bosch earlier this year after hearing an interview when his latest book came out. I've long been a fan of "hard-boiled" detective fiction--Chandler, Archer, Mosley, et al., but Raymond Chandler in particular. Go re-read the first page of the Big Sleep. I rank it up there with ...

I saw a really great "Dirty Jobs" episode (on Discovery channel) that followed an exterminator company around for a day. I thought they were a hoot--Vexcon was the company. They were very Goth, environmentally conscious as far as chemicals went, and inventive. One site, a farm, had a terri...

One of the things I do with my very big (115 lb plus) mixed breed Emma is put her in a stay, set the food dish down, and call her to heel. She sits, looking up at me with Bambi eyes until she hears, "Good dog! OK!" I can also call her off the dish. My thought is to reinforce with her that ...
