The Legacy of Turlough O'Carolan is a good disk containing a good selection of tunes played by a variety of instruments. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000005P5V/qid=1038230349/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_3/103-7453507-8327040?v=glance&s=music&n=507846">Amazon</a> If y...

Three thoughts come to mind.... Try to find a session in a surrounding town and see if you can find a flute player who will let you give one a test drive. Some websites have a session search page, search google for Irish and Session. Or, sign up for Terry McGee's Roving Ambassador Flute. http://www....

I have a tunable aluminum whistle that I believe is sold under the Chieftain brand. Great sound, but the tuning slide is way too tight. Inside the joint is a tangle mass of thread covered in some sort of sticky material. I thought about removing most or all of it to see how tight the joint is and th...

Terry McGee recommends putting a small blob of the putty used to hold up posters just beyond the embouchure hold.

Have you consider a polymer flute? I love my Seery and lik the M&E's I've played. They're cheap and have a nice sound.

When you upgrade to a more expensive wooden flute (which I am yet to do) you can use your polymer as a travel flute. They're indestructible.

Is anybody else attending the Irish Arts Week in East Durham,NY in a couple weeks? Does anyone who's been there before have any suggestions on how to get the most out of it? Things you must do and see? I'm looking forward to it, it's sometimes hard to stay motivated trying to teach myself from books...

My Seery came with a small amount of grease on the slide, so I just assumed eventually more would have to be added.

Interesting thread.

Can anyone suggest type of lube to use for the tuning slide on a Seery? It's fine now, but I'm sure eventually it will need it.

thanks,

I have the Finton Vallely book, I highly recommend it for other beginners. However, I can't find the cassette tape anywhere. Does anyone know of a source? FYI, I got my copy at http://www.melodystraditionalmusic.com/, which it turns out is just down the road from where I live. Easy to drop a lot of ...

I bought a D-maj bamboo flute from him this weekend at Scarborough Faire. I like it so far, I wanted it to carry around RenFaire's instead of my Seery when I didn't feel like carrying the later. So far I've not compare the tuning to an absolute scale, but it's definitely good enough to carry around ...

I went ahead and tried a bit of almond oil on my Seery. It did seem to smooth the tone out a bit, however my playing is not very consistent yet so it could I was just having a good day. So, not a definitive answer.

One issue, delrin is non-porous, so only use a little bit of oil.
