Three thoughts come to mind.... Try to find a session in a surrounding town and see if you can find a flute player who will let you give one a test drive. I have a tunable aluminum whistle that I believe is sold under the Chieftain brand. Great sound, but the tuning slide is way too tight. I bought a D-maj bamboo flute from him this weekend at Scarborough Faire. I like it so far, I wanted it to carry around RenFaire's instead of my Seery when I didn't feel like carrying the later. So far I've not compare the tuning to an absolute scale, but it's definitely good enough to carry around ...
