Re: Styles of Playing

I posted this on that other discussion as well. Back many years ago it struck me that there was a style, I suppose it could be called the Mary Bergin school, that I heard among people who played High Whistle as their primary (or sole) instrument, but there was a quite different style heard among peo...

Re: plain Canmore smallpipe bag?

Ahhhh ... you live in California. In Britain, anyone who has a dog, or likes hiking, or cycles to work, or goes bird watching is likely to get rained on enough to have reproof their Gore-Tex. You're right, I've never owned anything made of Gore-Tex except for that pipe bag! I do have a lightweight ...

Re: plain Canmore smallpipe bag?

I never heard of that, thanks!

I did find out through a retailer that Canmore can make a plain bag as a special order.

The one I have gave perfect service for around 20 years so I shouldn't be too surprised that it finally gave out.

Re: Styles of Playing

I've posted a few examples of whistle players from competitions at the 1976 Fleadh on Youtube. The recording quality is not at all bad from a cassette tape now nearly 48 years old: https://youtu.be/HML7FZ_fB4g?si=Bx0pvDUydyvU9UQB These players would all be contemporaries of Mary Bergin, this was 3 ...

plain Canmore smallpipe bag?

I've had my "miniature Highland pipes" (mouthblown, separate drones) tied into a plain (no grommets, no zip) Canmore bag for many years. It's been entirely reliable...until I was piping at a Burns Supper a couple weeks ago and the pipes started losing air. Afterwards I found that it wasn't...

Re: Becker whistles

Using a B whistle might be a good idea. My concern is that the range of the instrument might not be great for Scottish tunes. Scottish tunes in E frequently go down to a low E and up to a B an octave and a half higher. Playing this on a B whistle would require you to play into the third octave, whi...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.

I tried it, and the result is unbelievable; no condensation on the end of the windway like there was before! The question still on my mind is: is this something that needs to be applied periodically (because it only works when it's wet)? Or can I let detergent dry and it will still act as a surfact...

Since last I checked Burke made four different models of High D whistle, it would be helpful to be more specific in your description.

Re: MacLeod and Harris Chanter

My first Practice Set, late 1970s, was a Hughes & McLeod. I was a complete beginner with no-one around to teach me. When I took it to the nearest Tionol the experienced reed people didn't have much luck with it. The wood was turned down thin almost like a Highland chanter. Ironically there's a H...

Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute

Cuts on the mid E (top space of the staff) using your left ring finger won't work on the Galeon Firth Pond flute. Yes I've learned to use my right index finger for cutting middle E, also on some Low Whistles. The other thing is the little double-cut ornament, which I've learnt to do using my right ...

Re: High Ds with minimal impact on lungs/chest

The sweetest easiest-to-blow High D whistle I've ever played is my trusty old Feadog Mk1. When people try it they always wildly overblow it. Then when they find the right blowing they say "that whistle almost plays itself". The closest new whistle I've played is one of the earlier Killarne...

Re: Need help picking out a low D whistle...

Good advice there from Nathaniel. I have the cool situation of having both "medium" and "soft" Goldie Low D heads and I've spent quite a bit of time going back and forth. They're both top-class, both unmistakably Goldie, but there are subtle differences. With the "soft"...
