That is really funny! How true is that though? I often ask myself the same question....................And guys and gals out there with a spouse.............how many of you could theoretically or literally own one of thoes bumper stickers: "My wife said it was either her or my Irish/Scottish/Ba...

I agree with sean completely. As for people thinking all Irish music is the same, there is a great example in GHB music. All people hear are marches, marches, marches and because the tempo and/or feel is usually the same, they will tend to sound all the same to non-musicians. And also, there are a l...

Indeed, that is well said. I also forgot to mention in my post that said particular sessiun was held to allow all players to find improvisation/accompaniment whilst everybody was playing, whether they knew the song/set or not. This is not the norm, however, and as steampacket said, you normally sit ...

Well said uilliam. We had a sessiun where the very same thing happened once. The guy that did the attacking on this 14 year old (who by the way really was much better than him, though not as old/experienced) was a GHB and uilleann piper. To be honest, when the guy plays the GHB he fingers the chante...

Thanks for the link and information. I wonder if anybody else out there uses this song, as in non-professional musicians and the like.

Record question

Is anybody on here aware of an actual recording of the song Weile Waile? Our group performs the song a lot. Seeing as I have never in my long time of playing music come across a group or artists who has recorded that song, I wondered if there is one. My original guess is that albums from artists lik...

Yes, indeed it is. I loved to perform that song on my smallpipes the best, but it is also great for the uilleann pipes. It always gets a good reaction from the crowd, and with so many people who come to my performances regularly asking me to bring it back, I found I have to.

I must say that all of the tunes suggested on here for the A whistle are great. I will add to that a song that is played on the Highland pipes called "The Liberton Pipe Band" and is sometimes called "Lets Have A Ceilidh". It is a polka and polkas sound very good on A whistles. I ...

It is a bit sketchy in translation, but I was able to pick it up perfectly. Anybody who speaks German or Dutch (which helped me) should have no problem. Definitely a good background on the song. Thank you Cynth!

Thank you for this post. I happened to have reserved a copy of this book upon hearing of its impending release, and I must say I completely and whole-heartedly second its recommendation. At the risk of sounding like an infomercial, this is a wonderful book and really, it should be in the library of ...

And that is the very reason I would recommend his solo works. If not using recordings, see if you can find any of his sheets from a music store. Though some musicians in this genre scoff at sheet music, it can be a good source of learning and at the very least, a source of ideas from which you can p...

I too second the suggestions of Bríd O'Donoghue and Micho Russell. They are undoubtedly two of the best whistlers to ever have existed. Indeed it must be something about Co. Clare and the way the music is played there. But in all of this rush, nobody has individually mentioned one of the undoubtedly...

Cynth is on the right path. The correct spelling is in fact "Coinnle an Linbh Iosa" and the best translation is said as "Candle in the Nativity". You may also be on the lookout as you may come across a Scots Gaelig spelling of the word "Coinnle" which may appear as &quo...

I had put a request for this tune up on the Traditional Music forum, but I also wanted to include it here because if memory serves me correctly, I believe this tune was written for the mandolin. I would like to know if anybody can tell me where I can find it, or if you have it in any format, please ...
