Re: Narrow Low D
Goldie makes fine narrow bores, we have a medium-hard blower narrow low d and I wouldn't say it's tone is breathy (windy noise) at all, very reedy in fact. Holes are perfectly fine.

Labu Whistles Review
So there is no discussion about these products which is why I decided to post my experience with these whistles. I've got the Celtic bundle here: https://www.labuflutes.com/product/celtic-bamboo-whistle-set Ordered on Dec 12, arrived in Turkey Jan 18. https://i.imgur.com/GofPc5E.jpeg First a few nit...

Re: Best beginner whistle for ensemble?
I have Thomann High Ds, quite cheap (around €3.5 bought in bulk of ten), they're in tune, without any raspiness, might be even safer due to being all plastic and having no sharp edges. I would highly recommend. Might be a tad bit loud but they have very good first octaves sound & tone. The basic...

Re: approximate value of a Laughing Whistle?
For me, the greatest reason to have a telescopic whistle is having a conical (or as close to a conical) whistle, with the properties it imbues. Preferably, low F brass conical whistle. I know copeland used to make them, but, eh, (bleep)... What properties do you perceive that are specific to conica...

Not to thread-jack, but who else makes telescopers? O'Brien (whose site no longer exists) and Parks used to, but it looks like both of them are closed down now. Hoover is technically in retirement, but he made some for a while and this Youtube video made his popular for a while. He trained a succes...

Re: Wood Whistle Makers
No, no misrepresentation implied, just reminding us that it's not as simple as say cylindrical vs tapered. I haven't done anything on flares involving sound level measurement - it rapidly becomes a bit of a nightmare as you'd really need to set up "the blowing machine", find the right flo...

Re: Double hole whistles?
On the topic of chromatic designs, turkish flute is fully chromatic* with an asterix. XX (1.5 semitone) - thumbhole, rest below is standard piper's grip x (semitone) x (semitone) x (semitone) x (semitone) x (semitone) X (2 semitone) Lowest hole requires half holing, as does the highest hole, at leas...

Re: Wood Whistle Makers
On the note of "Wooden" flutes, I've just heard that my Labu Bamboo Celtic Set is ready to dispatch finally, after about a month or so of building. The communication was a bit stuttered, but they seem genuinely nice and try to be hopeful, and being able to purchase about 12 whistles for al...

Re: Double hole whistles?
Wow, what a novel concept. :really: I never thought I'd be on a forum where serious musicians would dispute this...that was before I encountered the Irish whistle-playing community. I mean to be fair, you're arguing that 10 hole chromatic whistles is superior in every way, which is quite untr...

Re: Double hole whistles?
I don't know, some people enjoy having a toolbox full of items, some people enjoy carrying a swiss army knife. Courses for horses. That's what's made me giggle about the whole thing. People with chromatic whistles would still end up with half a drawerful of them, just like people with whistles in d...

Re: Double hole whistles?
... most of these scales usually have their own special flutes. Thanks (for the whole post). The point above was what I suspected. In the styles of music most often discussed here, especially Irish, the idiomatic way of playing a wind instrument is greatly influenced buy 'how it works'. If a tune w...

Re: Double hole whistles?
« What we have here, is a failure to communicate. » I find that the people who are making points that I understand and agree with are communicating more clearly at each attempt. I am curious to know the *traditional* music genres for which a chromatic whistle is used. Apparently, Balkan/Slavic folk...
