Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?

Whatever happened with Casey Burns' 3D printed flute project? It was looking very promising, great-sounding lightweight flutes for a low price. He made a post of Facebook maybe a month ago updating saying he was soon to stop taking orders for keyed flutes and has stopped bulk producing his folk flu...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Oooh that mopane shorty looks really beautiful! Are you getting a similar sound and playing feeling out of them, or are there some big differences? This is a fun process to watch, thanks for posting! I love it. It was my first time working with Mopane and I’m in love. I still prefer Blackwood in al...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Thanks Jayhawk! I’ve seen your metal slide Terry, and it’s definitely an elegant solution. I presume you use a small amount of adhesive to hold things together? Or does friction simply do its part? In my case I’ve done a number of things to help combat future cracking (not much concern for that here...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Little bit of an update, done some work recently with Mopane and boxwood. Been fooling around with fully lined heads and am pretty partial to it if I’m honest. Also made one for a local player with silver rings on request and I’m super happy with how it turned out. Turns out that the design I came t...

Re: Flute Weights Sticky

In the interest of science and data I’ll throw four up here. First is a Delrin kelyless 5 piece long D foot, head fully lined with brass: 402 grams with a balance point if -28 The others are mine (why not!). T.King 4 piece Blackwood integrated foot, partially lined head (brass) with brass rings: 305...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Yes, this is quite exciting. I have a small CNC router that I used for several years to make items out of acrylic sheet and would occasionally mill some wood parts, but that always led me to want to get a lathe. This puts fuel on the fire :-) Your work thus far has been fantastic looking. Thanks fo...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Right! I believe I had read somewhere that some current makers have used that technique as well, jacketing the extension. I'm eager to give the electroplating a try as it would certainly be a much simpler process. But you're right, a 20mm ish long piece of nickel-silver tube wouldn't be very expensi...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Those look fantastic! I like the look of the brass, i suppose over time it would develop a nice brown patina? I’m thinking of the raw brass area inside the tuning slide on my trumpet. On the outside I think trumpets and other brass instruments maintain the glossy exterior with a clear enamel coatin...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Just wanted to show an update with rings. Ive made a couple flutes for some folks locally to great reception but I also plan to send a couple out to some willing people with more experience and whose unbiased and unreserved opinion I expect will result in some good constructive criticism. I’ve also ...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

I think this is a very good-looking flute. I know nothing of acoustic design, but the 3 section w/integrated foot is really attractive. I like the contrasting endcap, and not having a ring on the end of the foot, too. Thank you very much Flotineer, I appreciate it! I agree about the lack of a ring ...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Well, as stated, I’ve gotten a bit of soldering experience now and I’m pleased so far. I had some Blackwood sqaures still and turned this three piece to adorn with brass. I’m fairly happy with how it turned out. https://imgur.com/a/qfao5Sh The tone is actually pretty great with good volume and easil...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Thanks Terry, the pile of wooden and delrin billets currently sitting on my worktop in various stages of prep can attest to that! I’m playing around with some other hardwoods easily and cheaply accessible here. I have some Osage Orange billets that are next on the list, we’ll see how the relatively ...

Amateur Maker - Progress?

Hi all, I have lurked here for a while after I decided to pick up the simple system flute about a year and a half ago. I played a good amount of silver flute throughout my school years but hadn’t picked even one of those up in 15 years, so I’m very much a beginner, with perhaps a leg up on my embouc...
