Re: Advice on using a whistle with a solid lead block on fipple
I'm not sure I would play anything I thought had lead in it, at least not more than occasionally. If you wanted to play it regularly you'd ideally need advice from someone who understands materials well enough to know whether or not covering it up will work. There are amylases, lipases, and other di...

Re: Next progression from a Clark advice please
Part of the problem is that I don't want to burst anyones ears with the top notes so I tend to avoid tunes with them in. When I first came back to it, I learned the B parts of a few tunes as well as I could in the lower octave before I tried the upper. They mostly still need both octaves, so it mea...

Re: Next progression from a Clark advice please
Top A, B, and C# are always piercing, specially if you have to sustain them. It's true on any high D, and buying a better quality one can sometimes mean it's louder! I'd start with ear plugs – I've always worn them for practice. I use Docs Pro Plugs nowadays, which are actually for swimming but also...

Re: Case to repurpose to hold low D and a few other whistles
I know someone who made a case out of a length of PVC soil pipe, closed at one end with a glued-on end cap. He has it in a canvas drawstring bag with a long tape sewn onto the side, which forms a handle he can hitch over his shoulder for easy carrying. When he's travelling, he tapes another end cap ...

Re: Somers flute blows flat
On my second whistle lesson, I managed to play something through without actually making a mistake, and – despite the fact I'd forgotten to tune my whistle – the tutor said "Great, you did that well". A woman at the next table wheeled round and said "Jaysus, it sounded like a bag of c...

Re: Drilling Furniture grade PVC
A guy I used to work with often had to drill PVC pipes to make frames for theatrical props, and also make entire props out of PVC that were later painted up to resemble something else. He always used cone bits, and if it needed to be a neat hole, he'd use a cone bit with the maximum diameter the sam...

Re: Another Chinese whistle on Amazon
Wish me luck. Good luck, and it'll probably be fine! My Feadog has a small piece of Blu-Tack in it. If I fill too much of the cavity it deadens the tone, but it does need a little nodule the size of a lentil. Occasionally in very cold weather it will fall out, and I poke a fresh one in with the end...

Re: Another Chinese whistle on Amazon
Hi Moof Thanks for that interesting info, as it happens I do have emphysema so that's good to know. I only play for my own pleasure so the volume is not a problem, well not for me, maybe for the neighbours :D . I've seen other higher end whistles with this appalling machining on the blade and I jus...

Re: Another Chinese whistle on Amazon
The milling on Killarney blades is a bit weird looking, but at least on the two I own, it doesn't seem to affect the way they sound. They're the most efficient whistles I've played, making them ideal for an asthmatic. I'm not sure how, but the makers have somehow given them good back pressure but ke...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
The second approach is more ore less what an English flageolet does. Not sure why it was abandoned for whistles, because it strikes me as a very good idea, at least in the absence of a better solution. Maybe because for a long time, it wasn't needed? High whistles with plastic heads, once they came...

Re: WANXIAO Whistle on Amazon?
Oh, it's one of the weird M (or W) shaped ones.
I got a Clarke with a blade shaped a bit like that. I didn't like it much either, and I don't think it was very efficient.
