Re: Drilling Furniture grade PVC
I use these burrs for drilling holes on both wooden and epoxy flutes (which are probably similar to PVC in the way they drill) with a Dremel: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hakkin-Woodworking-Engraving-Polishing-Compatible/dp/B09Q8LKZ1C/ref=pd_ci_mcx_mh_sb_sims_3?pd_rd_w=fmnQX&content-id=amzn1.sym.d7d...

Re: Volume Control Ring - Why Doesn't it Exist??
I assume you mean slightly covering the near end of the window as that has the effect you describe. You could achieve that by having the windway move (or perhaps just the top of it), but you could also couple that mechanically to the wedge to move it a lesser amount in the same direction as well in ...

Re: Dizi: a superb podcast
That might be useful then to help bring a flat flute up to pitch by adding a dimo, and it would still play flat when you want it to. I can't hear any tuning difference in this demo though, so it may be a very subtle effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP_FpIj ... usicPteLtd

Re: Dizi - a superb podcast
It works spot on with chromatic open hole Boehm flutes and wooden flutes - Wikipedia is inaccurate and needs updating. Antoine designed his headjoint specifically for chromatic flutes btw. Thanks for that information and the link. I'd certainly like to give it a go, and I've got a couple of bad pro...

Re: Double hole whistles?
The photo's there, so that works. I'd love to hear more detail about how it covers the 12 chromatic notes, and about the cool slides. It sounds interesting, and especially the elliptic aspects. I'll try to record a video. It's better to hear. In short... Do you have an Irish flute? How are things g...

Re: Double hole whistles?
Hello! I have read yours posts... and just wanted to show my solution solved the problem. I often use eliptic holes and eliptic bore on my whistles and recorders. This is my fave whisltes. Advantages: - chromatic (forks, half-covers) - up to 10-20 cents - cool slides (1-2-3 holes at the same time!)...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
The solution I'm currently using has been working for many years. I don't wash the whistles I play. For the sake of the purity of the experiment. Other manufacturers, if they wanted, could have built condensation-free into their whistles a long time ago ;-) The only manufacturer is Mollenhauer: htt...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
I use the capillary effect. Water is absorbed inside the whistle head. One of my first attempt - www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsrK7nR_yZM Somehow I missed that post - I was responding to a mention of Teflon. I had wondered about having tiny holes leading away from the windway to some place where the wat...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
Has anyone tried carnauba wax? I've seen it used on cars where it makes the water stand in beads and run off easily, so perhaps it would make it easier for small beads to form and then blow out of the windway before they're big enough to become disruptive. If it works, it should be long lasting. If ...

Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
After practicing Rondo Alla Turca a bit, it is indeed very difficult. But I'm confident I'll be able to play that portion up to speed with some practice. I'm playing that portion in G# minor instead of F# minor, since I have a D whistle. I'll also add that I think this is probably peak difficulty f...

Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
I don't really get how you could think it's "easy" to adapt to new systems. There's nothing remotely "easy" about relearning all 1,000+ tunes you know on a new system. Sure, it's easier than starting from scratch and learning a new instrument as a beginner, but that doesn't mean...

Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
Regarding the first few points I made, you acknowledge that your new proposed design would be hard for woodwind players to transition to, which is my point. No I don't. I think it's easy to adapt to different systems, while the significant difficulties are those of the systems themselves. To judge ...

And voila, an Irish whistle with built-in F natural, with a lower hand that fingers exactly the same as the Kaval: xxx|xxxx D xxx|xxxo E xxx|xxoo F natural xxx|xooo (or) xxx|xoxo F sharp (second fingering having the lower-hand ring finger down as an anchor finger) xxx|ooxo G xxo|ooxo A etc. That's ...

Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
- Everyone who already plays the whistle would have to relearn to play from scratch. Most good players of woodwind instruments can play multiple types with rival fingering and they manage to keep each in its own compartment with its own neural nets dedicated to it as a device driver. - Everyone who...

Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
Just chiming in to say this is what Carbony does with their low D whistles. And it's also exactly the approach I think could be used to make a G sharp left-hand thumb hole for a high D whistle that was convenient to cover. This (combined with an F natural and D sharp hole, as previously discussed) ...
