Hi RoguePogue and welcome! My inspiration - whistle wise - has been Joanie Madden, founder of Cherish the Ladies. Wonderful player! Cherish the Ladies albums have some great tracks to play along with, such as Ned of the Hill and The Battle of Aughrim/The Star Above the Garter and Joanie's solo album...

Re: Getting a good C natural on a Sindt...advice?

As far as how to half hole goes, I went to one of Joanie Madden's workshops last year, who told us that she half holes by straightening the finger and rotating the whistle slightly clockwise with the thumb to uncover the hole (gee, I hope I heard that right  ) certainly works for me on high wh...

I like the Dixon Trad. it's responsive and nicely in tune, but is very sensitive to overblowing at the bottom of the second octave. I might not have ended up on this weird and wonderful path of tweakery and whilstlebuilding if my first whistle had been a Dixon Trad. ordered two Cheftain mezzo whist...

Re: Feadóg Pro head

raspy and scratchy Don't know about the contribution to the overall sound that the body has but I haven't heard a better description of a Feadog's tonal attributes :D People wax lyrically about the 'traditional' 'complex' tones but in all of the Faedog whistles that I've owned (and I do buy them in...

Re: strong bottom end on a high D.

I've been poking about for a while now and I think, after trying a few whistles that I've got my taste down... I can't quite find the feedback I'm looking for via searches but I suck at searching forums so I apologize in advance if this is covered ad infinitum elsewhere. I'm looking for these speci...

I usually steer well clear of any threads with an audience of popcorn munchers   in case my limited experience is called into question, but I have always read with interest, threads about the merits of picking up a high or low whistle first. I don't know what has inspired me this time, but...

Re: Thoughs on Alba Q1

my Dixon trad is a joy but the Q1 is giving me real problems mostly in the upper register Had the same sort of problem myself, adding a Q1 to the Dixons that I had already. Going for the top of the second octave, I thought my head would explode! :o . The Q1 has lots of back pressure and takes some ...

I'll second the Copeland vote, you can really 'lean into it' to help it cut through. Comparison is against Overton, Kerry, Dixon and Chieftain.

At 30 I visited Ireland for the first time and picked up a Kerry low D and tutor book whilst I was there. Took me the last 4 days to get more than one note out of it as I remember. Stayed with low whistles for the first couple of years, then 'graduated' to highs. Since then my collection has always ...

As someone had posted earlier, it was Tony Hinnigan who recorded the original and as the video below shows, it was recorded on a B whistle (but doesn't say which make) http://kerrywhistles.com/movie.php?pageName=Titanic_Whistles_06.wmv Must say tho, he does make it sound a lot like Andrea (only thei...

Hello and welcome! If it's tone colours you're after, I think that Copelands have a corner of a 'tone triangle' (i just made that up, by the way :) ) to themselves for their unique 'reedy' tone (my favourite of all whistle sounds) . I think the other corners would be epitomised by Overtons, for the ...
