I use whistling as a way to distract myself. Yeah, I would like to get better, but I decided to take it slower than that, so I'm not worried about all this... "technique" and "ornamentation." Sometimes I do have to force myself to pick up my whistle, even if it's just for 15 minu...

I started playing flute when I was 6 or 7. I played through high school and college, and was quite good, even a leader, but not 'professionally skilled,' which is fine by me. I tried joining a community band, which didn't work out so well, due to a lot of things, but mainly because some of the older...

So I followed a link provided earlier that mentioned bringing a tape recorder to sessions. Is this generally approved of? I can't find my little memo recorder with cassette tapes from the "days of aulde" anymore, but I do have a recorder for my iPod... especially nice, since I can p...

The problem with changes of address is that if you ship via UPS or fedex, the information doesn't get passed on down the line, as it were. When I was in a college dorm situation, while the school was "closed down," for spring breaks and such, mail was still taken in. In addition, if you ar...

I love John Wayne. Reminds me of my grandfather. They've been playing that movie a lot recently, I think because of the lead up to the awards last night. I read the wikipedia article on it a while back, and the price the rights for the short story sold for was something obscene like $10 or something!

I agree - I've always been curious about what a fipple looks like from the side view - like if someone would take it off and cut straight down the middle. If you could afford to sacrifice a cheapie, that might answer a few of your questions. I imagine that even a dremel would suffice for that cuttin...

I'll vote feadog, but I've only got a walton's. It's quite nice. I'll play it until I'm good enough to determine whether quirks and tweaks and squeaks are my own doing or the whistle's!

3. If the disc does not automatically play: * Open My Computer from the desktop (on Windows XP, this may be available from the Start Menu). * In My Computer, open the CD-ROM drive. * If a web browser does not automatically open, open the index.htm on the CD-ROM. 4. Once your web browser opens, you ...

I know I have a right to copy it. In fact, to be snotty about it, technically the requirements of a cd to have that "Compact Disc, digital audio" label on it say that there can only be audio. No programs, no nothing else, just the audio. These have that mark, AND say they've got a program....

Issues using CDs from "Essential Guide" on pc?

Hey there everyone! I just got the essential guide to irish flute and tin whistle, and wanted to listen while I was at work, but the CD doesn't run in my drive. I noticed the CD's had a message about audio as well as computer software, so I can only assume some craptastic DRM is blocking me. I can't...

Furry rod thing! I've seen other fluters with those, but never had one for my own. If I didn't have one for a flute, I don't think I'll be getting one for a tinwhistle! Lol! Well... maybe I will.... just for the hilarity of it all. Come to a session with a beautifully hand carved case, with velvet i...

Cleaning the cheapies?

If I were to clean one of the cheapie whistles - without a wooden block, like the gens or waltons or whatever, how would I go about it? Swish it in some warm soapy water, and then swish it in some clean water? Just put it in the dishwasher? (Just kidding!) What about right after playing, w...

You folk are wonderful. Yes, indeed what I have is schedule 20. I picked it because it was flexible (I was making a cat tent. Poles need to bend, you know.) At the very least, this stuff makes fantastic marshmallow shooters. But I'll go back armed with a ruler and see what I can come up with. Maybe ...

Problems with DIY whistle instructions?

Ok. I admit it, I'm a DIY freak. I do things just to see if I can. It's not for the end product, but the experience. So I've taken these instructions: http://science.univr.it/goccia/whistle/index.html But I can't find PVC here in the US with an inner bore of less than 13mm. Even 1/2" pipe, to m...
