My Kerry Songbird low D became stuck shortly after getting it. I wrote to Phil but ended up doing my own thing. I agonised prior to placing the whistle in a vice, using lots of protective wrapping around it first. I was then able to twist it free without too much force. I cleaned up the slide surfac...

To Roger: Comhluadar Éadaí Saor?

To Key-of-D: Canon in the Key of DDDD.
Guess if you took a measuring tape into a
church and measured the largest organ pipe,
it would give you an approximation.

A weapon of this nature was used to destroy
the walls of Jerico!

Hi Alf, Cormac Breathnach is one of the finest I have heard.
He has some fine samples here: http://www.cormacbreatnach.com/

Another whistle player I really like is Eoin Duignan listen here:
http://www.duigo.com/lumina.htm

Tell me now Alf, are you going to be making whistles?

I made myself a promise when I took up the whistle that I would never, ever practice. Let me clarify that statement. I play the whistle each and every time to enjoy the experience. While learning a tune, I may explore fingering, endeavour to improve decorations, or refine breath control. I assiduous...

Personally I really like the Low F. I have a Chieftan in F
and play it a good deal. The fingering is very easy on the F,
and it takes less puff than the D. Eoin Duignan uses the F
in his CD Lumina. He makes it sound terrific worth a listen.

In the end it is personal preference though.

http://xs113.xs.to/xs113/07094/WhistleCaveman.jpg I am handicapped by being illiterate musically. I have found the best way to learn tunes is to listen to the tune over and over until it "sticks" in my head. Good recordings help, not only in learning the tune, but also in the way I tend t...

You must feel the FORCE and trust the FORCE. But first you will need to build up those neural pathways in the old grey matter by dint of much playing and even a bit of practice. I play piano and can whip out any bit of ITM dance music like OK. But after more than 2 years of playing whistle, I am jus...

If only all folk were as open and honest as you are Bill, the world would be a much more pleasant place to inhabit. I hope you will find resolution in yourself and the energy to go forward. You can, no doubt, already see the support good people are prepared to give an honest man. Go neirí an mBothar...

The pronunciation depends on what part of Ireland
you come from!! In the southwest it would be:

baw-deen aisle-a-me

The J or G sound in Baidín, is more Galway and Donegal

And how does the Irish ear percieve Sting's rendition?
Not bad at all - in fact, I like the rendition - I'd say the lads in
The Chieftains had him well instructed on the phrasing.

Here is a recording of an unsophisticated sung version of "Mo Ghile Mear" in Irish. It has "conviction" and it has "feeling". It also has phrasing that lies easy on my ears. It should give you a fair idea of how the Irish ear perceives this ancient song. http://www.merr...
