Re: ad for lachenal 48 key - looks in need of restoration
Definitely a Duet. I think the Lachenal''s use the McCann layout, but don't quote me. I'm not sure either. My Wheatstone Maccann duet has 6 buttons per row, not 5, so I was hesitant to say Maccann. Good observation. Likely a brass-reeded Crane / Triumph duet. This could possibly cost more to restor...

Re: Hanafin brothers monument in Milltown !!
Hi all, Mary, I'm very sorry to hear that your great-aunt Eily passed away. My condolences to you and all her family and friends. Eily and I had a wonderful long phone conversation by accident one day when she called my shop looking for another different musician! She had a lot of stories including ...

Re: Variations in Metzler scaling
Hi all, I haven't been active in the flute world during the past 12 years (basically the internet age), so I am not up to date on recent scholarship. And I don't even have any of my out-of-date references here with me in Wisconsin where I'm living this year. However, I remember having and selling 2 ...

Re: Info on Oppenheim, London, boxwood/ivory/sterling 8 k flute?
Hi all, Still for sale. I would consider reasonable offers, possibly including partial trades. I have photos I can email or see the craigslist ad linked above. Because of the ivory rings, cap, and cork-adjusting screw, this flute might require some paperwork if shipped out of the USA. Paul Groff Mad...

Re: Kokra- The Other Brown Wood
I have not found many antique flutes made from Cocus (Brya ebenus), but rather Kokra (Liquidambar styraciflua). Not to say that the former hasn't had it's share of cracks, but the cracks usually stay closed, once they are properly repaired. There seems to have been more American flutes made from th...

Re: Info on Oppenheim, London, boxwood/ivory/sterling 8 k flute?
Hi all, In response to the threads on flute measurements, the center-center distance from the (high) C# hole to the Eb hole of this Oppenheim flute is around 257 mm. With my amateur embouchure, and the sterling lipplate that adds chamber height to the embouchure hole, the flute plays above A 441 wit...

yellowhistler, Re: your flutes "by Butler" -- I'm not up-to-date on flute scholarship, but I know that the concertinas labeled Butler, Haymarket were not made by that firm. The Butler-labeled concertinas I have seen were made by other shops including George Jones and Lachenals. At one poin...

Re: Info on Oppenheim, London, boxwood/ivory/sterling 8 k flute?
Thanks paddler! I always guessed this was an 1830s flute, based on its dimensions, pitch, keywork, etc., but would be interested to learn more about this flute. With some differences in number of keys, details of the keyblocks and the ivory rings, etc, the H. Oppenheim 8-key reminds me very much of ...

Re: Info on Oppenheim, London, boxwood/ivory/sterling 8 k flute?
dunnp, Thanks for that information, I missed seeing that piccolo. Another C & F member sent me the link to this earlier flute, stamped M. Oppenheim: http://www.musurgia.com/products.asp?ProductID=714&CartID=42035811272011 I'm guessing that my 8 key flute is 30 - 40 years younger than that M....

FS: H. Oppenheim, London 8 k flute, flamed boxwood, ivory
Hi all, A very nice London 8 key flute for sale, in very flamey box/ivory/sterling. Possibly someone here knows more about 8 key flutes with the mark of this dealer (maker?). My flute looks much nicer than other Oppenheims I've seen, so this flute may have been made by another workshop. Purchased in...

Re: Beautiful 19th-century antique flute for sale
Susan,
What a beautiful flute. As I understand the description, the Shoreys seem to think that Shepherd & Sutton were dealers and that the flute was made by an excellent maker. Any more thoughts on exactly which maker?
