Re:
Wow, that looks exactly like the Irvine tweak that Tommy's been doing! That is correct Darvis. The Irvine tweak is the predecessor to the original ''Shush"! I chose to make them using the Feadog whistle with its tapered wind way. I ordered a box of 12 D Feadog from Phil at Big whistle and he s...

Re: Want to play Name That Whistle?
Turn the fourth one over and look for a 1/16” round dot? I use styrene pin to hold the white delrin plug in place. Also some of my black felt bags had a felt strip to fold over the top into, and some just an elastic pony tail holder?

Re: Tweaking a whistle with a dirty/harsh sound
Check the wind way exit to see if is the same size height at both sides. Sometimes Generations or Walton’s have a little more height on a side and it makes the air stream exit uneaven. Then the blade receives more air on one side than the other. The wind way exit needs to be a near perfect rectangle.

Re: Louder whistle with tapered bore?
Tommy makes a conical tapered soprano with 14 mm bore tapering down to a 11 mm end.

Re: Drilling a hole in blackwood
I would use a center drill to make the pilot hole/starter hole.
Center drills don't wander like a small diameter straight drill.

Re: Flute making Apprentices
Terry thank you. Very kind and generous of you to share your knowledge. Your website is also a wealth of information. I have one other vintage flute to tinker with, not enough work to hire an apprentice though! Not so vital now that we've invented electricity! Yes electricity allows us to do many t...

Re: Flute making Apprentices
Terry thank you. Looking at it today with a better magnifying glass I believe it says Regent. Also has the name Simpson, brand name? And in upper case "PATENT" but I see no numbers. I cleaned the rings to look nice but don't know if silver or chrome. The head joint liner/tuning slide appea...

Re: Making Conical Whistles of Rolled Metal- Resources?
So wouldn't that leave a thin blade of metal running down the middle of the whistle? Yes it is inside on the Bottom. The seam solder can be cut with a utility roofers knife then open it can be made flat and used for a pattern. Scroll back to the picture with the fipple square and look at lower left...

Yes there is a slot.Terry McGee wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 6:50 pm Great video, Sirchronique, thanks for sharing.
What isn't clear to me is what makes the blank want to "take up" with the mandrel as it is rotated. Is there a slot in the mandrel?

Re: Flute making Apprentices
I have a vintage flute with silver rings and tuning slide that appears to have brass with silver plating that extends into the embrocher hole. It has a small space between the wood embrocher hole and metal liner. Thinking of removing it to clean up air flow through the blow hole. The markings are fa...
