Re: End of an era

This isn't some random whim I've decided to chase. I've been a regular gigging musician for my entire adult life and I've been offered guitar teaching jobs on the strength of my reputation. My wife has built up a full piano studio primarily on word of mouth. The problem is that although teachers can...

Re: End of an era

I'm not wealthy. I worked hard to save up a year's salary, which, anywhere else in the country, would last me much, much more than a year. I know it's going to be a rocky road getting started but I also know that I will be OK if I do what I love. The fact is, the money I have is a poor substitute fo...

End of an era

I spent the last 16 years (out of 29 total) working as a software engineer. I stopped enjoying it more probably around 2002. 6 weeks ago, I gave my notice at my job. Friday was my last full day, I just have two meetings to attend this week and then I am done. In early June, my wife and I are hitting...

Re: Wanted - antique F Flute

Not yet. It's looking like we'll get to our destination (most likely Bellingham, WA) around the end of the year. But we will be through your area once or twice along the way; we'll probably have our annual gig at GDs early in June.

Six keys, minimum. Anybody up for a trade? I bought this little guy a few weeks ago and am quite taken with it: http://i20.ebayimg.com/06/i/001/40/41/3bc9_12.JPG 19thC/Antqiue Wooden Four Key Flute By Butler. - eBay (item 200329152685 end time Apr-16-09 12:30:00 PDT) Seller also had a Buffett F I s...

I'm glad they fixed that, when I first saw that new page, there was a piping clip behind his link.

If you REALLY want to piss people off, forever, there's nothing like a banjolin.
One of my sessionmates stopped bringing his after I mentioned that it sounded like a clucking chicken. I actually liked it, though...

Usually Catherine asks for the recordings of her workshops to not be shared with people who were not in attendance.

Re: From a more gentle time?

Earlier, Jack Coen, Rafferty were mentioned as "other than", as if their playing is sweet and soft. It isn't, not if you've ever sat in a kitchen with them, or beside them at a session. I haven't done that (yet) but I agree with you, I just expected that they would be offered as examples ...

I doubt Peter was implying that micho lost his teeth BECAUSE of the flute playing.

Re: From a more gentle time?

It would be interesting to go back through field recordings made in Ireland of non-professional players before them to see what the average player was up to. And not just in Ireland of course; often the diaspora is a better window on earlier conditions than the homeland One can do just that at the ...

Re: From a more gentle time?

Actually, I'd really like to hear some examples of the "gentler" older players. Other than Jack Coen and Mike Rafferty. Looking through my collection and finding Mick Flynn, Packie Dwyer, The McDonaghs, John Griffin, etc. The guys on the "irish music from cleveland" albums, whom ...

Re: From a more gentle time?

Well, I don't have the longevity or breadth of experience that you do, Terry. But as far as I can tell from my collection of recordings, I don't think people play faster, louder, or more aggressively than before... If anything, there was more variety and individuality in the pre-Molloy era. Certainl...
