Re: Daye NARROW bore designs- anyone try to make a C or C# PC?

I hope you are successful in making and reeding the "Harrington" penny chanter. I looked at the specifications for this chanter on David Daye's site a while back and I have to say that it raised some doubts. I noticed that the fingerhole placings and diameters were almost identical to the ...

Re: SRS Kenna C set Drone Reeds

An overblowing type reed might do the job: maybe OL about 60 -65; cane tongue about 40mm; sucked note about e flat (15 semis above C). A small restriction somewhere in the bore might help bring on the overblowing.

Re: Chanter design development ideas

Islander, here is my invention to get the C below bottom D. Get a tube of cane or something about 4 or 5 inches long. Tie a couple of pieces of string to it and tie the cane to your right leg near the knee. When you want bottom C during a tune cover all the holes and "drop" the chanter dow...

Re: Chanter design development ideas

Some nice ideas have been mentioned and I wouldn't want to rubbish them. But someone has to try and implement them:- that's the difficult bit and that's always the difference between dreams and wonderful (and sometimes diabolical) inventions.

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes

The owner of this hoard obviously lives in an extinct volcano somewhere in the South Pacific, travels to Willie Week via submarine and steals valueable sets by jumping from bridges onto speeding trains, substituting the pipes of sleeping travellers with boxes of Black Magic.

Re: The Taylor Sound?

Those are lovely sounds posted by Bill. However, to be fair to the Taylor "detractors", I was referring to the wide-bore "concert" sets rather than the narrow bore. And I can identify with the tales of blue tack and wire, having had several desperate attempts to get a Tayloresque...

The Taylor Sound?

In his interview with Bill Haneman David Quinn reveals that, although he is well known for his extensive studies of Taylor pipes, he doesn't especially care for their sound and prefers the "Rowesome Sound". So, my question is: What are the distinguishing features of the "Taylor Sound&...

I get the impression that he is overblowing to the twelfth, like a clarinet, and using the keys to "fill in the gap".

Re: 3/4 sets and hollow mainstock, advantages?

One thing we can be sure of:- vibrations travelling through a complicated shape of a thing made of wood, metal, leather and moving air are going to be difficult to understand. I find stringed instruments a little bit easier to understand than bagpipes:- The vibrations travelling through a soundboard...

Maybe things will pick up in September, especially as most of our posters live in the Northern Hemisphere.

Re: South Wales Tionól Sept 5th 2009

We may be joined for a bit of a sing song with the local choir depending if they are sining in Libya or not !! The thought of a whole Welsh male voice choir sinning away in Libya is mindblowing! I used to work there and can confirm that sinning goes on just like in any other place. However, it can ...

Leo Rowesome sets

I wonder how many sets Leo Rowesome made? Presumably most of them still exist. Did he make any flat sets?

Re: Egan's Universal Chanter Reed?

The postings on this topic have been very interesting but a little disappointing in so far as there has been precious little info. on actual reed dimensions. You would think that some general agreement on dimensions would be central to the concept of a universal reed, wouldn’t you? In the Sean Reid ...
