Re: Rosetta Stone and dialect

One of the guys in my Irish class used Rosetta Stone. It drastically improved his pronunciation. I didn't see much improvement in his command of the language though.

Anglo Ornamentation

I've been going it alone on concertina for a few months. I'm at the point now where I'm looking for a good explanation of ornamentation. I play flute/whistle, so it's not stylistic help that I'm looking for. But what do I do physically, to get the same types of sounds out of a concertina? (Really, I...

Christy Barry's 3 and 4?

I was checking out thesession.org and saw someone comment that Kevin Crawford only recorded the first two of four of Christy Barry's jigs. Is this true? And if so, can someone tell me where to find notes or recordings of the second two tunes in the set?

Re: We all hate these, but...considering concertina

Thanks for the responses all! I really appreciate the advice. Getting a 20-button would not be an option, considering the crowd with whom I play. (Already as a whistler I have a disadvantage in terms of available keys...) The Button Box sells Rochelles and offers a purchase price refund for them if ...

We all hate these, but...considering concertina

Hi all, I'm an Irish flute and whistle player, and I've been considering starting concertina over the summer. I'm not sure if I can afford a decent starting instrument. I know that the $200-300 concertinas are not worth buying. Is there, however, something in the $500-700 range that's a solid instru...

Thanks all. I know people who oil religiously and wondered whether they could actually be doing more harm than good. Then, there are others who never, ever have oiled in their life. I guess it's one of those things that can just depend so much.

I dunno. The question is hypothetical at this point. I play a rosewood flute and use a commercial bore oil. Or, we could work with a worst case scenario, which could be rather interesting. Whatever wood soaks up the most, with something like peanut oil that can be used, but doesn't provide a lot of ...

Over-oiling?

I oil my flute as directed, but I'm just curious. As long as a flute keeps drinking up what you give it, is it possible to oil too much?

1) Irish flute & whistle 2) I like accompaniment to be: - not too overpowering, especially for whistle - steady, but flexible enough to follow me (especially on songs) - interesting and complementary to the tune (not just all chords that sound alike: do a little something special with it) - in t...

I just got one recently. I absolutely adore it!!! I haven't played many flutes, though, and the ones I have played have been obscure models. So, I can't really compare it to much. IMHO, Glenn's craftmanship on his flutes is just as wonderful as on his whistles. As chas said, the tone is spectacular....

Yeah, I really like it too. I originally heard it from the Old Blind Dogs' recording on the The World's Room. On thesession.org someone says it's from the 18th century, when Italian music had a big influence on Scottish music. The poster there believed it was probably by James Oswald.
