I've been working on putting together some tunes that are particularly demanding on each hand and while I've got two that give the right hand quite a limbering up (The Jolly Tinker and the Bucks of Oranmore), I've only got one for the left hand that really fits the bill (Dinkey's Reel). So, I was wo...

Hello All,
I'm wondering how other folks approach mastering a tune that you've basically learned. That is, after you've learned it by heart getting to that place where you can play it with rock solid utter confidence in a public setting.

That's the only kind of double and triple tonguing I use mostly because I just can't get the the tuh-kuh-tuh tuh-kuh-tuh thing coordinated (yet). The problem is that a lot of times you want a staccato effect and the softer d-l combo won't give it to you.

Go to http://www.sheetmusicnow.com and download the Amazing Metronome. It gives you features I've never seen on any other metronome. It's just a few steps away from playing with a rhythm section behind you.

Sorry to revive what everyone probably thought was a blessedly dead issue, but for the sake of the archives and for those of a scholarly temperament I thought I'd add one little historical note. I was reading The Northern Fiddler the other day and found an exchange in which the old Ballygawley fiddl...

Here's another thought: Isn't it funny that if one of us were to find a first rate set of pipes, or a great fiddle, flute, or concertina for 300 bucks, we'd think we'd made the find of the century?

You "ear only" folks are way too puristic for me. I find learning from notes to be a quick and easy way to learn a lot of tunes in a relatively short period of time; it's easy enough then to adjust the timing and phrasing once you actually encounter the tune in a session. I tried to learn ...

Hi folks. I've never been able to get my lips to do what they need to do to get a decent sound on a flute; I've also never heard a low whistle in person--so, what I'm wondering is this: does a low whistle produce enough volume to allow one to be heard in a session? Also, are fast tunes do-able on a ...
