Re: So many choices! What's right for me?

Perhaps it's because I usually play with the same folks (most relevant, the same box player), but I haven't had this problem with the slideless flute; there seems plenty of available adjustment by shifting the tenon a bit. Honest question (and probably a thread derailer, sorry): given the number of ...

Dale's tribute

If you haven't read Dale's lovely tribute to his mother in Right Hand Pointing, hurry on over. I can't seem to copy the link, but a search for Right Hand Pointing, a click on the current issue, and another click on The Note will get you there.

Re: So many choices! What's right for me?

But in case you're not going to take Denny's thoughtful advice, I'd suggest considering one of Dave Copley's slideless blackwood flutes. At a bit over $500, it's a well-made, well-tuned instrument with plenty of dynamic range, and it can be redone with keys if you decide that's what you like (Dave's...

Re: Lad I don't know where you been, but I see you won 1st Prize

I second Prof. Stone--lovely, both the award and the flute.

Mr. Doyle's website is worth a visit even if you're not after a flute. Fine sound clips in the flute music section and some useful comments in the testimonials, especially Ronan Browne's.

Re: American slow airs?

Did "Wayfaring Stranger" get mentioned yet? Sounds lovely played very slowly on flute. I'd been thinking of starting a similar thread on sentimental songs that are great for warming up or for playing (in my case, anyway) when the faster stuff just isn't working. Not American, of course, but...

Re: Crowfoot, Nicholas Williams workshop

That's exactly what Nicholas said in the workshop (and every fiddler I've ever gone to for advice has said the same about the bow).

Crowfoot, Nicholas Williams workshop

I enjoy the music of Crowfoot, and hearing them play for a contra at the Flurry festival in Saratoga Springs yesterday was a serious treat. Here's the website if you're unfamiliar with the band: http://www.crowfootmusic.com/ Their mix of traditional influences and improvisation makes for good listen...

Re: Piccolo, anyone?

Or you could splurge: Hammy Hamilton and Skip Healy both offer piccolos. Here's what Mr. Hamilton says on his site: The piccolo is even higher in pitch than the fife and is normally in D, a full octave above the concert flute. The piccolo was used quite widely at one stage in the history of traditio...
