Sharp C Natural-Reeds
OK so I have been struggling away at reedmaking for 4months or so now and have only made one truly good reed. The main problem always seems to be a sharp C natural. In reality its only just a little flat of C#. I play a Simack chanter and the reeds made by Ian allow me to play the C natural with bot...

I'm in Sydney also. Good luck finding a tutor though. I come from GHB background and moved into UPs a year ago. Private message me if you want my phone number to have a chat about the "scene" or lack there of. By the way Paddy Keenan will be here on the 22 March at the Harp Hotel in tempe....

Gouges
Whoa! Thanks very much everyone (especially to you John for the essay-your time is appreciated). Seems like this is just another hurdle to overcome in the process of reedmaking. As if it wasn't challenging enough!! There really isn't a lot of reward early on in this game it seems. The carrot always ...

Sharpening Gouges
I have been attempting to make a working reed now for a few months..limited success. I am at the point where I really need to sharpen my gouge. Any tips on what to use? Are there cylindrical sharpening stones available for this purpose?
Thanks

Paddy Keenan
I agree. Its hard to find all the pipers around this place. I only know of a couple. I don't even really know how to go about getting the word out there. I have one contact in the TRAD scene here and then this forum. Thats about it. And I think there are only a few Australian Pipers who read this fo...

Paddy Keenan Workshop Sydney. Anyone Interested?
As you may know Paddy Keenan is coming to Australia in March. There may be a possibility that he will do a workshop in Sydney on the 23rd March. Would any Australian pipers be genuinely interested in this?
PM me if you are.
Thanks

would the tunes on this cd be suitable for a beginner to learn? I would like to learn some airs but I am new to learning by ear.

Thanks Jonathan. I hadn't heard of it until I saw it on the web some where and it said it was released in 2005 so I didn't realise it has been around so long.
So does heavy on production also mean the album has those bad new age synthesiser sounds?

Has anyone heard Mick O'Brien's latest CD? If so what are your thoughts? Is it the same high standard as Kitty Lie Over?
Thanks

Shoulder Pain
Yep you have to be careful with the shoulders Baen. I was practicing an hour a day and the pain on my bag arm shoulder got so bad I had to stop for about 4 weeks. Even when just sitting at my desk at work my shoulder would be killing me (and driving a manual wasn't fun either). I was even in the pro...

Oz Piping
I was quite surprised to see that it had filled up already Patrick! I was giving it some thought but seems it will have to be 2008. Where/when is the NZ Tionol? I had never considered that. You're right flights to NZ are sometimes cheaper. Hmm the Nat. Folk festival sounds excellent. Shame it clashe...

Oz Piping
I don't watch telly myself but one thing that I know a lot of people do find difficult is the distance, but Joe's right, we should try and get something going again, any ideas? Does anyone have any details for the mob running things in Koroit? Koroit and Port Fairy (they're about 25 miles apart if ...

Oz Get Together
Pity its not so alive over here in the east.... It would be a fantastic idea to have an Australian get together of Uilleann pipers. I suppose the vast majority would be inexperienced beginners like myself (no value for good pipers) but I am sure the experienced players would benefit from spending ti...

Hard D Vs Soft D
Thanks for the replies everyone. I will try that suggestion tonight David. Goldy, I'm hoping to get into making reeds in a few more months when I have a better understanding of the instrument. Ian mentioned he could show me his method at some stage. I'm still keen to compare Simack chanters (and to ...
