If you have music in mp3 format, you can use a plugin for the winamp player that slow/speed songs without changing the pitch . This may be a great help when learning to play, at least for me it is. The one I use is: http://www.ronimusic.com/winamp.htm Typically with those things you can change the ...

This is the worst #$@%! excuse for a thread I've ever heard!!! Only someone of acutely deficient intelligence, lack of social grace, suffering from offensive bodily odors, and who probably tortures puppies would ever think of such a thing! Come to think of it, _every_ thread on this #!%^ board is SO...

Thanks, all. I was mostly hoping to hear it "analog", since streaming broadcasts' quality is often (always?) poor. But I'm overdue for another CD spending spree, anyway!

Sigh. My local NPR station (WUOM) is all of a sudden off the air, so no Thistle and Shamrock for me! If anyone ends up with a recording of the program that they'd be willing to share, I'd be much indebted! I wasn't able to find an archive of old T & S shows in my (admittedly brief) search.

I'll defer to the more experienced, but FWIW that sounds a lot like a pretty defective Walton's Mellow D I had. I was able to tweak it with the "guitar pick tweak" and make it sound quite nice, but at first it was basically unplayable.

Yeah, I guess the "modal" sound is part of the appeal of ITM. I did generalize inaccurately, though we should probably include nassssty rock music in there with the artsy stuff.

There are some B minor tunes that can be played on a D whistle as well, although it's not exactly B minor (what would it be called, if the A is natural instead of sharp?) Does anybody know a few ITM tunes that are in B minor? We were trying to think of these a few days ago, but we couldn't come up ...

Mixolydian is something that you see in older tunes, especially pipe tunes. Mixolydian tunes have the "feel" of a minor seventh chord, if you know what i'm talking about (e.g.: D7). One example: Banish Misfortune. glauber, I think we'd say that it has the "feel" of a dominant se...

Ooh, that's a good one... It reminds me of the Toronto subway poster I saw once about famous songs that nobody ever gets the right words to. My favorite was "Blinded by the light, ripped up like a loofah by the foreman in the night..." which is hilarious if you really think those are the ...

I like " schadenfreude " (a malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others). That one word explains why all the "reality TV" crap (among other things) is so popular in the US. Cheers, John Popular in the US? When I was recently in the UK, the latest "Big Brother" ...
