Re: Saint's Day challenge

*E K Johnston's excellent and witty The Story of Owen This book is set in a slightly reskinned Huron County, Ontario. As this is where Goderich, home of the excellent Celtic College and Celtic Roots Festival, is, I've actually spent something like ten weeks in that area, and it was really fun to tr...

Re: Buying a whistle in Cleveland Ohio, an effort in futilit

I haven't checked recently, but last time I looked the White Crow in Saginaw had both brass and nickel Generations in the normal six keys. If I remember I'll check it out during my son's fiddle lesson on Monday. White Crow Generation stock as of today: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KW41rZR4uC6eg...

Re: Buying a whistle in Cleveland Ohio, an effort in futilit

Last time I was in Elderly (few months ago) the selection of whistles, accordions, and CDs was pretty disappointing compared to what I remember from a decade or two ago. The selection of string instruments remains brilliant as far as I can tell. I haven't checked recently, but last time I looked the...

Re: Donncha O Briain

I know that he comes from a family of musicians, a few of whom still play and perform. I want to say Uilleann pipes. Oh, right, this may not be obvious to people because of the difference in approach spelling the name. Piper Mick O'Brien of Kitty Lie Over fame is Donncha's brother. He's also the pi...

I've heard the set referred to as "The Sligo National Anthem". :)

(Edited to add, I feel like I should have come up with an appropriate mind-boggled emoji for this post.)

Re: Learning with more than one whistle

really laying into it at the top of the second ... not saying this is the source of your problem, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly the opposite of what I do at the top end when I'm playing my Killarney? I think of its entire range as being as far from "laying into it" as I can possibly ...

Re: Price, Skill and Sound

With whistles, due to their fixed tone-production mechanism, no amount of practice is going to change a whistle's built-in characteristics. Maybe so, but for sure practice can change your approach to playing that instrument, which can make a huge difference. I know it was probably five years of whi...

Re: Price, Skill and Sound

Edit: I also feel the need to add that the fact that many good players play "cheap" whistles is a very deceiving statement. First of all, many of those people are playing pre-1980 Generations, which is before they replaced their tooling, which has resulted in their modern day whistles bei...

Re: Price, Skill and Sound

What is the trade off of practice eventually making a cheap whistle sound better, versus just ponying up the money for a better whistle. Would a $20 or $30 whistle sound better right off? Would they still sound annoying for several months as I break in? Is the $20-$30 price point no real improvemen...

Dang EXCITING !!!
Weird! An Eb/D/C set, but a totally different design for the tuning slide / bodies. If it really went for 181 Euros, it was a real steal!

Re: O'Riordan contact information?

It seems that O'Riordan had several styles for different whistles or purposes. Also could be the progressive improvement of design/materials development. They sure are beautiful instruments... all of them! Just did a quick survey. All my higher O'Riordans are basically identical, with tiny variatio...

Re: O'Riordan contact information?

Thanks, those are a help. I'm not sure how I'd get that flush brass pin out to disassemble the head. If it went all the way through sideways I could push it out. I might be able to drill it out, or excavate around it enough to grip it with a needle nose pliers or hemostat. It looks like the roof of...

Re: O'Riordan contact information?

Here's a couple more pictures for you. This is a 2002 Traveller Eb whistle, but it's the identical design/size to the D. You can see into the airway here, the way the head is two pieces of delrin (?), and the tiny metal pin that holds them together. http://www.harmonyware.com/pictures/Traveller_Eb_2...
