Re: Breathing problem while playing ?!?!

I know an Anglo buttonbox player who started out on harmonica. Last I heard, he still breathes in tandem with his box as if he's huffing on his gob iron. Hmm. I can only imagine that you might be referring to a local C#/D box player, not an Anglo concertina player. After nearly 12 years of p...

Is there any easy way to get your head round learning the 2 notes on one button? Advice that is commonly given is to buy a cheap harmonica and let that be your introduction to the concept. Better, I think, is to borrow a box for a few days. I realize that this is a month after the fact but I might ...

Since I'm self-taught (played harmonica for years, one or two classes with John Williams), I never had a clue what to do with the left hand to actually make sense with what was been played on the right hand. About 6 years ago, a local B/C player who was switching to uilleann pipes gave me a little a...

Yes, you should use the breather button, that's what it's there for. The bellows action changes for each tune, so as you learn how to play a tune (right hand fingering, left hand direction of the bellows) you'll also be learning just how much air is needed. As a beginner, only use the button as need...

Living in Rosemount has its advantages, I guess. I'm glad that you folks are safe.

I did end up callling a former girlfriend (musician/ceili dancer) to check on her, because she uses that bridge daily to/from work. She was shopping and hadn't quite reached that part of her commute at 6:40pm.

Scottish Buttonbox

I was sent this article about a fellow attempting to revive Scottish buttonbox. While I'm a regular session player on my C#/D, I'll admit that I was pretty sure that the Scottish tradition had cornered the piano accordion. Of course, that opinion was based on the fact that I've never stumbled across...

As is usually the case when someone asks the "B/C vs. C#/D" (or pick whatever keys you desire), one of the better answers is "Which is the one that is either played most in your area OR the one you are most likely to take lessons or get pointers on?" I never gave any thought to m...

Put me down for C#/D. I've been playing since '98, far too long for many of the local (to St. Paul) players tastes. I play in pick-up groups for the monthly Irish ceili dance, at the local sessions, in my own band for the pubs and for several of the local dance schools and performance groups, and in...
