Re: Darach de Brun R.I.P.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Darach's passing. He was a good friend and a fantastic whistle player, piper and composer. I met him at the Milwaukee Irish Fest Summer School in 2002 and we became quick friends (especially after getting thrown out of Bodolino's one night when they were trying ...

Re: Info on Reel "Men of Erin"

You're thinking of "The Murmuring Tide". I've kept in touch with Darach over the years and am eagerly awaiting the Drantan CD as well as his other project - "The Beehive". "The Murmuring Tide" is on the Drantan CD. I have numerous recordings of it from the class as well...

Re: Craic at tionols and C&F one in the same

Heard this morn that Minneapolis is the second drunkest city in the US...list leader is Milwaukee. Perhaps the pipers there in Minn will want to "fix" this problem and take over first place! Something to consider at the next tionol I suppose. What do you guys drink when piping? Me, I pref...

Ah yes, I was at the St. Louis Tionol. If you thought it was smooth then, you ought to hear it now! I just had the chanter reed adjusted and all new drone reeds put in by Benedict. The old reeds were metal/wood composites but the new ones are wood/wood - quite a bit smoother sounding and none of tha...

All right, I'll bite. Here's a very basic transcription of May Morning Dew that I did a while back from Mick O'Brien's recording. Although I firmly believe the best way to learn the tune is to listen to it, then listen again, and again... I find that the act of transcribing the tune helps me learn i...

Finally got around to taking some photos of my pipes. Here they are: http://www.bugsoft.com/craigh/music/pipes/image/20060808-144531.jpg Half set: Dave Williams chanter (circa 1990), Quinn drones (circa 1978, parts of bass drone circa 2006), Quinn bag & bellows (circa 2006). http://www.bugsoft.c...

And I have to add my thanks to Tom and the gang as well. John and I (the Madison contingent) both had a blast although it took me awhile to recuperate  . We enjoyed listening to great piping CDs from David, Tommy and the SCUPC on the long drive home. Even found some new tunes that have to go o...

Hey Pat,

Do you think you might be bringing some copies to sell at the Great Northern Irish Piper's Club Tionol in May (although I'm not sure I can wait that long)?

Just ran across a website that has some potentially useful info about blackwood, ebony, and other exotic woods. It's at http://www.exoticwoodgroup.com/.

Cheers,

Hey Rufus,

Do you have any sound samples of this set? I asked this previously via eBay but perhaps their system isn't working properly.

Anyone else have any positive or negative comments on this set? (PM me if you don't want to offend anyone  )

Drones/regs to complement Williams chanter?

Hi all, I know this is purely a subjective opinion type question but what maker's drones/regs do you think would best complement a blackwood/brass Williams chanter in terms of sound? Dave was making drones for me when his life was tragically cut short. I have some half-formed opinions about some set...

After deflating/filling bring the bellows back to the open(ready )position for the next time, repeat. I have a question on this particular statement. In a class with Benedict Koehler, I recall that he said that when you are not in the process of operating the bellows, the bellows arm should be simpl...

Terrible news about Dave. I never met him but had talked with him on the phone several times and he was always pleasant and generous with his time. I have a practice set that he made and the chanter is just fabulous. He was making a set of drones for me and I was looking forward to the day when I co...
