I just got the whistle this evening. On first playing, both my partner (who mostly plays fiddle and banjo, but also plays a little whistle) and I are loving it! I can't wait to try it out at session this weekend. And I did see the note about the flu -- hope you're feeling better! I gave it a good go...

I play Susatos almost exclusively. I have them in the keys of E, Eb, D (both SB and VSB), C, B, Bb (SB), low A and low G. I need to get a high F and a low F next! I LOVE my Susatos...I only use my Oak D when I'm trying to learn a tune and I don't want to be too loud. In the low register, the oak can...

I started whistle when I was 27. But I had been playing clarinet since I was 8, so I wasn't starting music at the same time.

I feel like my session is small compared to a lot of these. Ours is generally: 1 fiddle/concertina player 1 fiddler 1 fiddle/banjo/guitar (usually DADGAD) player (who also occasionally sings) 2 whistle/bodhran players (who trade off) We sometimes have an occasional additional musician or two, but se...

All of the notes should have moved up 6 semitones. It sounds like you didn't transpose the whole thing correctly. The Db on the bottom should have become F#. We could help out more if you could let us know what tune it is you're trying to play or scan in the original music so we can see it. ~Crysania

Well, without seeing the music it will be tough to figure out exactly what key. But my guess is that it was in Ab major. Moving up 6 semitones from Ab major would get you D major (which as 2 sharps), so I'm going to hazard a guess that that is the right key. As for semitone vs. tone. A "semiton...

Cnet reviews is another great site for checking out professional and non-professional opinions of cameras. I just got a Canon SD600 for $240 (though I hear you can get it cheaper). A friend of mine sent me this page , which lists it for closer to $200. I absolutely love this camera. It takes great p...

My favourite place so far has been up in the northwest, Co. Donegal. We spent 4 or 5 days in a little town on the Atlantic coast near Dungloe and it was just amazing. I found Donegal to be just breathtaking. If you think you might like to stay in one area and make day trips outward from it (which we...

If you have to have a percussion instrument to keep the beat, I worry about the rhythmic capabilities of the band members (really, anyone in ITM should be able to play a tune on their own and keep a steady beat). Bodhran is not a "flitter flutter" instrument and adds nicely to a tune...but...

I grew up in Camillus, Renn, and my parents still live there. How ironic! There are a couple sessions around. I used to go to the larger one that's open to anyone. It's on Sundays (4-7pm). 1st Sunday of the month is at the Half Penny pub in Armory Square and the 3rd Sunday of the month is at Johnsto...

It sounds true to me, Renn. When I lived in Potsdam, I noticed that the temperatures were often colder than those in parts of Alaska. On the good side, however, it's -21 in Barrow, AK. Now that's cold! (Though I did live through colder temperatures in Potsdam my first year there: -38 before the wind...

Ahhh...the North Country. I used to go to school in Potsdam. It's frigid up there!

Sometimes I miss it. (I live in central NY now.)

But I hate admitting that to myself.

You mean like the second key on a D whistle is G? The second key on an Eb would be Ab.

Not entirely. I've played recorders that require any of those fingerings. The basic fingerings are: Fnat: X|XXX|XOOO F#: X|XXX|OXOO The other fingers down are to lower the pitch if the instrument tends toward being too sharp on those pitches. On the main recorder I used to play, I had to alter both ...

Actually, it's the Fnat that's cross-fingered, so except for Cnat, from D-C# the fingerings are exactly the same :) (O|OXX|OOOO is actually an alternate B) You must be playing very different recorders than I ever have been. The ones I played, fingered Fnat as X|XXX|XOOO and F# as some variation (de...
