Re: What's the best thing about the Uilleann pipes?
The best thing about Uilleann pipes is you don't have to take a hit in price should you be forced to sell pipes made by a reputable maker !!

Toothpaste does a great job at polishing metal parts and it smells nice too!

Re: Household products useful to a piper.
I read somewhere to crush a walnut (or two) and rub the oil on wooden parts. It worked for me and since it's fresh, I haven't heard anything negative like going rancid or creating a sticky residue. Crack open a walnut, take the pieces, wrap them in a cloth (handkerchief works well) and crush them in...

Re: Bellows connector tube material?
I was thinking about trying some surgical latex tubing, nice and flexible and cheap. Chances are it will collapse when bent. To stop that, you would have to insert a soft coil spring inside the tubing. Metal rubbing against the latex won't last too long though. Years ago, I posted some photos of sp...

Re: The most recognisable sound of Uilleann pipes
....concert pitch pipes are most recognisable sound of the Uilleann pipes.... RORY For me they are/were. My introduction to Uilleann pipes came from David Arkenstone's CD "The Celtic Book of Days" released in 1998. The piper was Eric Rigler. Having played oboe in the school symphony, my e...

Re: Wax recipe
Ted, I did an internet search... but I couldn't find anything on 'tuning liquid'. Does it need drying time to setup? I thought most people used Poster Putty, it 'wears better' than beeswax. The most famous brand is 'Blu-Tack' Although more obvious from a distance, it sticks well and doesn't leave a ...

Re: What's the white thing?
Formica is a name brand of PLASTIC LAMINATE. Typically, it's fabricated from cross grained layers of paper & resin fused together to give it stability. There is a post-form laminate where the layers of paper run in the same (grain) direction making it more flexible. It's slightly thinner than th...

Re: Sound of the Chanter Top
If I remember correctly, around 8 or 9 years ago, pipemaker Bruce Childress came through a nearby city (on his way to vacation) and we tested a brass top against a wooden top (on the same chanter) and I found no discernible difference in sound.

Re: BOXWOOD: Natural vs Acid stained
I've heard the term "fumed" where the wood is placed in a chamber over a tray of acid. The fumes of the acid penetrate the wood and react with it, making it darker and hardened. Acid-stained is the same process... Yes? The acid (liquid) never touches the wood. German oak flooring is treate...

Re: advice on buying and selling second-hand pipes
Whats your opinion on giving your medical history or your financial predicament as a reason for sale? My opinion is: I would like to know the background for the reason of the sale. Buying pipes from someone who is selling (to raise funds) because their new set is nearly finished, I'm OK with. Havin...
